Topic: Ultimate Prog Tournament 4-2: Crimson v. Floyd Posted: March 11 2008 at 21:59 |
This one also should prove to be very interesting. King Crimson in an extreme landslide for me, but I'm predicting this to be close.

Hmm, King Crimson seems to be more widely accepted here (but I find Floyd's entire catalog overall more accessible and consistent - while still progressing, of course). As I love all of Floyd, and only enjoy a certain period of Crimson thoroughly, I will have to go with the 2nd option.

This is the toughest one of all for myself! These are my two favorite bands as of now. In the end I will go with King Crimson!

The Crim, mostly because of the later Floyd output not being good enough. Two top-notch bands though.

Where's the neither option? Well each of these bands has one masterpiece so it's too close to call. I'll let last.fm choose for me. Floyd.

I love both of them, but Crimso was my first touch on Prog, and if I did some kind of "Top 5 Crimso/Floyd albums" list, there would be three or four Crimsons and only one or two Floyds.

Another case of choosing your favourite child here .... Love both bands, and in the Eighties I used to be a HUGE PF fan. Currently, though, I listen to KC much more often, and (as others have already pointed out) I find their output more consistent in terms of quality. So, it's the mighty Crims for me.

If I think too long on this I'll get a headache so I'll decide quickly. Pink Floyd Since this is about preference, I had to go with PF because while both bands changed their sound a good number of times without losing quality in their music, KC made a lot of music that was very interesting but not as "emotional" as most Pink Floyd's music. From the beautiful songwriting of Syd Barrett, to the spacey style prog of the early Gilmour era, to the gritty storytelling of the Waters era, and even the later toned-down stuff. All of it has more heart than most of Crimson's work IMO. Please don't hunt me down and kill me for saying so

King Crimson has some very good music, but I prefer the brilliant Pink Floyd.

How these 2 bands are rated above Tull, Gentle Giant, Camel is beyond me. They are only half as good when it comes to song writing

It's surprising how many people have first had a PF period and now turned to KC. Myself included . As to the poster above me, unless you give some arguments, could you pretty-please spare us of subjective judgementals? I can't say for Gentle Giant, but Tull and Camel are both way behind KC when it comes to music, innovation and instrumentation. Song writing? The ability to write songs? I think they've mastered it a long time ago and are beyond that.

There is not much exciting or beautiful prog on Red, Larks, Starless and Islands. Maybe a couple of good heavy riifs and a couple of nice songs, but alot of bland songs which are experimental but pretty boring as far as songs go. Camel and Tull are surely better song writers and that makes them better bands, while Crimson over experiment. Poseidon and Lizard was looking really good when it came to song writing, but it went backwards a bit after that. Tull remasters dominate Crimson and Floyd. Thick as a brick, Living in the past, Heavy horses, Songs from the wood, Bursting Out out do Floyds and probably Crimsons career in regards to quality song writing with enough complexity to keep you interested. Plenty more quality Tull out there too. Tull are in a different league, because Anderson was a genius. Latimer was a bit of a genius too. Fripp was a guitaist and Floyd didnt have the song writing and talent to match Tull and Camel, unless you only listen to mellow music all your life

I don't know really which I like more. Pink Floyd has significantly less votes, so they get mine now.

I am surprised but delighted by King Crimson's margin. My surprise is because every other day when I look at recent reviews I see first reviews by new members who seem to have joined so that they can say "This is a great Pink Floyd album, one of my favorites. It's absolutely stunning music and I love it. They are absolutely brilliant on this album, as on many others. Pink Floyd is my favorite group" End of review. But I guess that those type of people join up write their 5 or 6 reviews and then go. I am delighted because, if you haven't guessed, I think KC is far superior to PF.

King Crimson. I love their chilling atmosphere. Pink Floyd is a band I've tried to like many times, but failed miserably. Guess it's too spacey for me. I tend to lose attention and start staring at my bed for some reason . Put on a KC album, and you're instantly nailed to the wall by those sharp, angular moments and Fripp's guitar.

Pink Floyd, they are BIGGER, lyrically, conceptually etc. And their mature albums tell about real life problems, I think it's important.
Crimson are more abstract and rather "pure art".
