Don't have a cow if I didn't list an artist/ band that worked with Henry Cow, and didn't list an album that you desperately wanted to choose as your fourth favourite album on this list.  This has been getting broader (and will continue to even when I don't change the poll... Lots of excellent choices...)  THough i lack space for an "other" option please list it in a post.

(the forum ate my previous post, so if two similarly worded ones appear in a row then it means that I'm good at the internet. very good in fact. on the high score table.)

Since those three Art Bears albums occupy my three Cow top spots, I'd vote for either Casablanca Moon for being lush and sophisticated or for In Praise of Learning for being vicious enough to resonate with my copious directionless anger. and the music's good.

but I'm clicking nothing, since I haven't heard anything Kew Rhone.

As for omissions, this'd be a little more complicated for me if I also had to consider Aksak and Skeleton Crew. Those bands have five star ratings in their futures...

Kew Rhone is superb.  Excellent suggestions, in fact I really would like to add Skeleton Crew and Aksak.  If there are other ideas, I can edit out some of the lesser-rated options.

I will be adding  Tim Hodgkinson  to PA soon.
Then it can be a little more complete.

As many Frith albums as I have it's amazing that there's still so much out there I haven't explored.
Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

A timely reminder to knock 'Kew Rhone' up a few notches in to be purchased list, it is a unforgivable oversight in my collection.

Somewhat of a hard choice for me, henry cow were probably my slowest burning band within prog, and
because of this have become one of my favourites, 'twasn't till midway through last year the sutble intricacies fell into place. Western Culture has been recieving a right flogging on the turntable after recently picking it up on vinyl, but their album which has always layed dearest in my heart is LegEnd. Tho' not reputably their best offering, it is my favourite and one of my favourites within the progging world. I still need to pay more attention to Art Bears, I have heard and liked all their albums, but have yet to
spend proper time wrapping myself up in their music.

None of the Cow's solo projects have overly interested my tastes (mainly talking Frith and Cutler here). I have trawled through numerous Fred Frith albums, but none have really hit a cord. Respectively I feel the musician visions were far better realised in a collective environment.

I feel differently about this.
Having been listening and exploring Hodgkinson's music, I find that he's grown and developed and become much more than he could be in those "boundaries".

(A shocking revelation - I don't like Art Bears too much... At least not as much as others here...   Shocked  )

Suppose I cannot really comment yet on Hodgkinson's works or for that matter most John Greaves (shame on me) so that statement was a little overarcing, it was mainly in regards to Chris Cutler and Fred Frith. But thinking upon it I'm sure people will disagree with me on this as well.

Another pair of tangentially Cow-related album that I love are Dagmar's two renditions of Eisler/Weill/Brecht songs, called Supply/Demand and Panzerschlact, or something like that but spelled correctly. =)

They're nothing particularly proggy so I won't force it onto your list, but I love the cabaret and political music, doubly so when they're connected, and perhaps I can blame my tastes directly on these two collections.

Going with Frith's Speechless, because I like Skeleton Crew's debut, Aksak's debut, and Frith's Gravity more than them, in the opposite of that order (huh?!).

Like to amend this list with Hodgkinson's music later.  Thanks for the heads up on Dagmar Krause's albums.  I'm familiar with them, but haven't heard them.  I had intended to only list bands/ artists projects in the archives.  And I removed other the other option due to space limitations, but of course that doesn't mean that people can't choose other options in posts.

As generally with topics accompanied with polls, the results don't matter to me so much as the comments.  I hope to become familiar with lots of great music here.

Lots of albums I do know and love here.  Revisiting Chris Cutler's Domestic Stories now -- very good album.  As for my fourth favourite, I asked it, but I have no idea.  Thought it might be a good way to make sure that people had heard at least a few (well four to be exact) albums that chose to vote, since people so often vote in "vs." polls without knowing  more than one option.  Maybe I should have made this tenth favourite...

If I were to choose the four I've most been returning to of late, they would be The World as it is Today, Kew Rhone, In Praise of Learning, and Desperate Straits.  All very good, and suit my moods these days.  I'll choose Slapp Happy's.  Oops, still had Domestic Stories in mind, as it's playing, and voted for that.

Great idea for a poll.

The brilliant News From Babel and Lindsay Cooper's excellent soloalbums could be added to this impressive list of releases as well.

I think I'll go for The World as it is Today (might have picked Letters Home  by NFB) although I've finally really warmed up to Henry Cow lately. Aksak Mabouls first (both really) is a gem too.

I knew there was plenty I'd missed.  News From Babel is one of those bands I've been considering getting the albums of for quite some time.  Later on, I will update this poll list (excuse me if it starts to look very disorganised as I pull out certain options where I feel I can).

God I love that song. Clap

Time to do do some editing to the original poll (find space to add News From Babel).

Whoops! I voted for my favorite too. Now we'll never get to know what album really is that special forth UK-RIO fave.

Btw: I've got to follow up on Lindsay Cooper. I think she has the strongest (or maybe its just the one I prefer) solocareer of the lot, and she's not even in the archives! Try and find a bad album among these . Her signature basoonplaying (+oboe, flute, saxophone...) and compostition skills (she composed all the music for News From Babel) are heard on every album and project where she's contributed.  Sadly she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in '91, but still continued to perfom up to '98.

For soloalbums, start with: Music for Other Occasions. A fivestar, easily. (the split CD Rags/The Golddiggers is a good deal too)

Good to see you 'round again Christer. I'm just posting to echo the above thoughts. Music for Other Occasions is absolutely adorable in a sinister kind of way. Thanks for reminding me she's not in the archives, I will have to spend put some time aside to work on her addition, as I will be pleased to see her added along with a couple of fivestars sitting next to her name! Sometime early April I will try jumping to it, assignments coming up so I don't have too much time for additions.

Thanks, BV!  Its great that Lindsay will soon be added here. I look forward to it. I know how timeconsuming adding and making bio's are, from the one time I've done it myself. And that was a band (McLuhan: Anomaly, an excellent gem) with just one album ever made.

Btw: You seem to be digging further down in electroaqoustic obscurities etc, nowadays, no? I discovered a whole lot of late 20th century composers the last couple of years myself. The ones I feel most strongly about not being just a passing fancy are especially: Gerard Grisay, Kaija Saariaho and Morton Feldman (Among the composers not yet truly canonized).
