Exactly what I feel about language "barrier" - it never bothered me, but some people do find difficulties if they do not understand the lyrics. For me, the lyrics of songs are more interesting as sounds than as actual meaning, but I guess it is all personal feeling.
The second studio album "Kameni cvjetovi" (Stone Flowers) from 1999 is good, more pop rock, but far from Modra rijeka. The recent 2CD compilation "U inat godinama" issued by Croatia Rec. is recommended for prog fans, no pop hits are included. Cheers.

I've never viewed language as a barrier to my enjoyment of the music. I do know that for this album in particular understanding the language would only enhance my appreciation. Maybe I'll check out more of those translations mentioned earlier in the post.
I'm excited to try some of these downloads too. These compilations are hard to come by in the US. I also have the 1999 studio album.
Thanks!

I am glad to hear you like it despite the language problems. This LP is surely something unique, even for the Yugoslav context back than... Cheers!

Modra Rijeka is one of the most amazing albums I've ever heard! It has quickly moved into my top ten of all time.

Sead, I have downloaded this but it asks me for password when trying to unpack! Do you have the password by chance? Thanks. |

Ha, amazing! But I believe you of course, since the "world we are living in" is occupied by consumerist junk all over around - I regularly attend book fair at Sarajevo, 2 times a year and it is unbelievable what type of trash literature has been put in front rows of the book stands (with few exceptions)...
But I ma sure Dizdar can be found at libraries (where you can borrow and make copies) or at second hand shops. Keep trying...

Seyo, would you believe it, I was not able to find any Dizdar's books (which I was searching since mid 90s) in any Croatian bookshop!! (including the online shops).
There might be a chance at second-hand bookstores, but it's a lottery. |

I think some of the songs from "Modra rijeka" are taken from Dizdar's poetry book "Stone Sleeper" which has been translated into English.

Yes, I posted these 3 (actually 2) songs in English. There are two translations of "Blue River" and a "Word about the Man". These 2 bear Mak Dizdar Foundation mark so I guess there are more available...

^ I've been reading the translation of three of the songs in there http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=7440&PN=6 (I think you posted some of them) and I'm really impressed. Very beautiful lyrics in fact. Is 'Modra Rijeka' a concept album right? Please let us know if you can find something else

I would really like to find 'Modra rijeka' lyrics somewhere (perhaps the best lyrics I ever experienced in music) and translate them to English, at least in a rudimentary form. I had that idea since I joined this site, but I had never find the lyrics

You are right. There are many non-English bands that are excellent but unknown. I must confess that I don't know well even Italian scene, and not to mention other "eastern" countries. I heard about Phoenix and will definitely check them out....

best Yugoslavian, yes
very good, yes
but I still have some other non-English albums ahead of it, mostly from Italian bands and Romania's always underappreciated Phoenix
