Topic: Is Throbbing Gristle not considered prog rock here Posted: April 17 2008 at 13:18 |
I did a search and could not find them listed. I know they are sometimes considered 'industrial', but virtually every prog rock book/authority I have read puts them under the umbrella of prog. Has this band never been considered? They are out there, and certainly not for everyday listening, but considering they were doing this back in the 70s, I would think it would fall in some genre here.

Hmm, I love this band and early industrial in general (they're not just CONSIDERED Industrial - they ran the label and helped define the term as used in music), but I think they'd be a hard sell to any *genre team*... Maybe the avantgarde guys will care; we have The Residents, after all.

Topic moved to Suggest New Bands... since they're not here, the suggestion for evaluating them is valid.

If they aren't in the archives you need to create the tropic in General Music Discussions. If you are suggesting them for inclusion the topic needs to go in Suggest New Bands/Artists.The Prog Music Lounges are for discussion about artists in the archives only.
Since it seems you are suggesting them for inclusion I am moving this to the Suggest section of the forum.

The members of TG would kill you if you called them Prog. I bought their albums when they came out because of the synths. BTW, it's a shame that 2 of their best songs, both on "20 Jazz Funk Greats" ("What A Day" and "Still Walking") have clipping problems on all CD versions. You can hear loud pops in places where the electronic percussion is loud. Listeners who never heard the original LP's probably think that the noises are part of the music, but they're not.

Honestly, I had the painful experience of listening Throbbing Gristle back when I helped in the radio in the late 70's, early 80's, we received two albums from them (Self titles and 20 Jazz Funk Greats), the first one being a totally cacophonic and caotic form of early Industrial blended with Punk, the second being some sort of boring Industrial blended with Synth Pop.
I followed therest of their career by article, and honestly I never heard anybody calling them Prog.
The fact that they were pioneers of Industrial back in the late 70's, doesn't mean they are Progressive Rock band, being ahead of their time doesn't necesarilly means being Prog, and I believe they are far from Prog and would hate to be included in a Prog database.
