Found the announcement on Los Jaivas official website:

Teatro Universidad De Chile (Santiago):
“PARIS – SANTIAGO”
Re-estreno: mayo 7
Funciones: mayo 8, 9, 10, 14, 15,16 y 17 – 19:30 hrs.

As I understand, music of these shows includes Los Jaivas pieces (played live by the band) and songs of great French singers.
It promises to be an interesting event.

Is anyone of our Chilean friends going to see the show?

Thanks, I can wait even longer.

It's also interesting to know whether one or some of these shows will be filmed for DVD.

So, I saw the show tonight. I have to say, it's something I've never seen before.

At one corner of the stage were Los Jaivas (say a quarter of the stage, maybe a little more), and the rest was for the ballet. And also, at a corner, was a guy painting a picture.

The show started with "Hijos de la Tierra", and the ballet begins with the coreographies. Between songs were excerpts from french songs (Edith Piaff was the only one I recognized, and Los Jaivas continued with "Canción del Sur", "La Conquistada", etc. The ballet was not like a classic one, but some numbers of equilibrium, some more classic if you want, some a bit odd, for example, when "Los Caminos Que Se Abren" was played with a playback of the original song, and some live inserts here and there.

At the end, the picture was complete (painted all the time in front of all the audience) and shown to the public with "Mira Niñita". The picture was something like a typical one of René Olivares, sorry but it's difficult to describe.

Great show, I really liked it, with songs from "Los Jaivas" to "Si Tú No Estás", from "Palomita Blanca" to the intro of "Arauco Tiene una Pena" (damn, they played only the intro, but it was great). At times it was difficult to choose if to look at the coreography/theather or at Claudio Parra playing or the whole band. I have to say, there were a couple of moments with more dancing than music, but, so what? At the end of the day, I'm more than satisfied.

Thanks, Proglodita, and my congratulations Thumbs%20Up.

The guy painting the picture - could it be René Olivares himself? At least on "Los Jaivas en Rapa Nui" DVD (excellent film!) he was painting pictures onstage while the band was playing.

Are there any rumors about filming one of these shows?

By the way, "Canción del Sur" and "La Conquistada" are my favourite Los Jaivas songs. I'm really conquistado by this great band. If back then, in 1983, I was only aware of Los Jaivas, I could see them live, with Gato and Gabriel, in Moscow Cry.

You know? I just bought the Rapa Nui dvd today, but I haven't seen it yet. But considering that point, it makes sense that it'd be René Olivares.

About a film, I have no idea, and I didn't see any camera. Really, I don't think so. It's too little stage when comparing with Rapa Nui, too little production maybe.

I know because I have Rapa Nui DVD. I even wrote quite a long review: http://www.progarchives.com/album-reviews.asp?id=18239

It's a pity there were no cameras, at least for non-Chilean fans like me. Our chances to see "Paris - Santiago" show are too low.

And I forgot to ask who sings now "La Conquistada" - Mario Mutis or Carlos Cabezas?

La Conquistada? No, I don't remember. Sorry for that.

And now I'll begin working on my review of Mamalluca... 4 stars.

NotAProghead, I have good news for you. Today it was the first session of a mini guitar course I'm taking with Ankatu Alquinta, and among the things he said, it is just what you are waiting for: Los Jaivas are working on a new dvd, based precisely on this show. So, you just have to wait... We'll see how is the result.

Regards.

Muchas gracias, Proglodita! Great news! Thumbs%20Up

By the way, did you ask Ankatu about band's plans for new studio album?

And please tell him that there are fans outside Chile who love Los Jaivas and believe they still can create great new music.

Yesterday I recieved from http://tienda.suena.cl/ my copy of "Paris Santiago" DVD

It is the show recorded in 2003, with Aurora (what a voice, beautiful!) and Eloy Alquinta (RIP Cry).
Aurora Alquinta sings most songs, very talented singer, deep, velvet voice and, like her great father, she knows and feels HOW to sing. Definitely I wish to see her in LOS JAIVAS again.

DVD released according to LOS JAIVAS highest quality standards, video montage is made by Gigi Caciuleanu, author of the choreography, himself. Good decision, who knows better how to show the ballet if not the choreographer!

Wonderful DVD. Already added it on PA: http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=19240

Yes, I got the surprise on the new releases section. I think I owe a round through the stores.
Good hint that, tienda.suena.cl, I didn't know about it (yes, I'm here, but it's not easy to find some CDs).

Btw, I asked Ankatu about a new album, and that seems more difficult. He said he would love to do it, but the rest of the band is just focused in other staffs. It's just not on the plans.

Pablo, it seems only you and I are interested in this thread. Maybe rename it to "Los Jaivas appreciation thread" to attract more prog fans? Wink

I'm very happy with tienda.suena.cl, because it seems it is the only place offering the whole Los Jaivas catalogue (and lots of other good Chilean music as well).

Los Jaivas are so many years in music, so they don't need to hurry with new album. Anyway I hope sooner or later they decide that it's time to prove that current line-up is able to create new material of the same level as they made with Gato.

And, if you are still communicating with Ankatu, please ask him about musical plans of his sister Aurora (can't help falling in love with her Smile). All I found on the web about her is:
1) she had her own salsa band (unfortunately no band's name in the article);
2) in 2004 she left Los Jaivas;
3) in 2005 she gave birth to her second child.
She's extremely talented singer, it's a crime if she will stop singing career (with or without Jaivas).
