have you heard the all-italian tribute to Robert Wyatt? I found it remarkable and peculiar and it must be even more so to people who know all his music - I only know select works.

I have not heard that one. I have many more tribute CD's that I have not listed yet.
I also have a set of CD's from an English 'cover band' that is really good. I will post them with pics and descriptions later..........They are called "CrossCut Saw"

There are a couple of Rush string quartet albums - one with 2112 transcribed (although local Rush pundit Tony R, wasn't impressed). Rather excellent and critically acclaimed Mahavishnu Orchestra album by the Radio String Quartet last year (on the German label ACT). I was introduced to this music in part by being sampled Daryl Anger , both as a solo artist and as part of the Turtle Island String Quartet (check the Windham Hill Records compilation of this group)- coincidentally  picked the Kronos Quartet's version of Purple Haze this afternoon, for my next Thursday night radio show.

Personally I don't hear this as "tribute", rather serious musicians tackling  compositions and arrangements by modern composers, as opposed to Mozart of Bruch.
