What do you think?
Piper at the gates? In the Court of the Crimson King? did Peter Banks with Yes do it for you? Or maybe the Nice? The thoughts of Emerlist Davjack? |

the Nice for sure, though I'd say Ars Longa is a somewhat better album.. Family had some very good pre-prog records during the brief chrysalis of psych and art rock and of course High Tides debut is quite bold

How about some Zappa?
I haven't heard the Aerosol Grey Machine, but VdGG is my favourite band so I'm sure that one is quite good as well. |

Trout Mask Replica (TMR), Phallus Dei (PD), The Soft Machine (TSM) and Volume Two, Hot Rats (HR), Sea Shanties (SS), In the Court of the Crimson King (ItCotCK), Valentyne Suite (VS), Safe as Milk (SaM), Basket of Light (BoL).
Maybe PD for me, but TMR, TSM, HR, BoL and SS are so good. I'll go with Amon Duul II's excellent debut, Phallus Dei, or maybe Stormy Six's debut. Edited by Logan - May 14 2008 at 17:03 |

I think In the Court takes this one with Days of Future Passed not too far behind.

Sticking to progressive rock rather than avant garde rock blues or psychedelia
Touch (ignore this seminal album at your peril)
Soft Machine Volume 2 (before Volume 2: Brit soul then psychedelia/after: jazz fusion)
ITCTCK
Renaissance (the Yardbirds line-up)
Nice Ars Longa Vita Brevis

Without a doubt: No, not "In the Court of the Crimson King", but "Phallus Dei" by Amon Düül 2. Though of course "In the Court of the Crimson King" is a great album too. But I can't quite understand why so many people vote for it, because I know pretty well most people think 25% of that album (the last ten minutes of "Moonchild") are "crap". Though I don't share that opinion I know it is pretty common. So I am a bit amazed about that album being cited so often.
