My son reckons "Katatonia" (NOT Catatonia) are a proggy metal band - apparently like Opeth with softer vocals (like Steve Wilson).

I've never actually heard any = what do you reckon?

Certainly a good band to debate. I like all their latest output. 'Prog' could be a stretch. I do not mind seeing them here.

I'm only a fan of their old stuff (no surprise), another band when they went "clean-vocal" I lost interest, Dance of December Souls tho is one of the most agonizing albums Ive ever heard, probably my most listened to album that year, (93)

Death-doom turned modern rock, neither of which is prog in my opinion.

Thanks for your thoughts - I'll let my son know, and maybe I'll get to hear some of it.

By the way - when you say "clean-vocal" - do you mean NOT like death metal vocals (sorry for my naiveity)?

Personally I'm not a fan of death metal vocals (it must hurt!)

yeah, clean vocals = actual singing vocals, ...non-growled, shouted, screaming, etc

Jonas Renkse said he messed up his throat screaming so much in the early years of the band, thats why on their second album they employed the help of Michael Akerfeld (Opeth) to do the vocals, after that Jonas took his try at clean singing and has been doing it ever since,

Katatonia is fantastic, but I would never call them a prog band.  They are depressive death-doom, though lately they've dropped the death vocals.  The Great Cold Distance is a great album, but there's nothing I'd call prog about them.
