Direct Link To This Post Topic: James LaBrie and DT !
    Posted: June 01 2008 at 14:49

I am reading this forum  for a while, well there is something i wanted do be discussed ! and is u can guess its about LaBrie.

A lot of people think they the latest works of DT are not fit right with his voice, and i also saw that some people said that DT with another singer would be better.
(well i some of friends also cant stand DT becuz of laBrie's voice)

but my idea is,DT without James is not DT.and never will be better with what they can call a Metal-singer.
i am sayin,DT have its character, without its singer voice which is a major part of its character,it doesnt feel like DT anymore.i can not imagine DT without laBrie.

let me make an example,
Coldplay is about to release a new album, and Brian eno participating in this album, many people saying that will be an amazing album of Coldplay.
I heard 1 song of this album, well, the music is more complicated, and it seems to be something new from them,i am not sayin its a bad or good album,
but,it doesnt feel like coldplay, coldplay should be easy an light, thats coldplay character, when i feel like a alternative song,i may choose them, but not this album, this is not where they belong.

u can see meynard keanan,he make his Tool music with Tool,
he makes his A perfect circle music with them,
and even, when he wants to try something new,he starts a band like puscifer !
which he is free to do what he want.

A band, its not just about music,a band should have Soul, have character,
like after death of Bonham, the band said they can not continue as Led zeppelin anymore.

back to DT situation,
James laBrie is a part of DT soul, without him, they are incomplete, they are far from bein DT.and its not just about him, other members have the same situation.
thats why u can see bands like liquid tension experiment and OSI.

at the end,i am saying a band, should have its soul and its character, not some labs to exam musical theories ! music is not just about instruments.

i am saying, maybe laBrie voice bother some, but i cant stand DT without him,
that what DT about,

petrucci guitar,portnoy drums,myung bass,rudess keyboard,
and,
LaBrie voice !

----
Dont make examples wit Ayreon, cuz in Ayreon situation thats the Character : being different.
As lucasson himself said : he always want to make something new, something different, and changing members, not only doesnt damage this, but also help the "being different" thing.

So,
whats ur idea ? :D

When the dogs are looking
For their bones
And its raining icepicks
On your steel shore
Im gonna break
Im gonna break my
Im gonna break my rusty cage and run

Too many complain about Labrie. I think his parts are SO demanding that when he is a bit off on live recordings certain people (or 'critics') rip into him. He is talented as hell and I can't see DT without him either.

I find these 'controversial' vocalists to make bands who they are. Cedric of 'The Mars Volta' comes to mind as well. Even Jon Anderson of 'Yes'. All unique voices out of the pool of vocalists create some of the most popular bands.

I think he can sing very well.

I personally like his voice.  I've never understood the criticisms about him.  Sure he occasionally has difficulties live, but wasn't that because of the vocal chord rupture?  I also think he did an excellent job on Ayreon's The Human Equation album

Agreed!

Double-agreed...

When live, sometimes his voice is not perfect but sometimes (as in "Score") he sings as great as in the albums....

On recording, on the other hand, is my absolute favorite singer bar none. He can give power, but mostly, he can SING a melody like nobody else. He can move me, really, like mostly no other singer can. He's a SINGER, not a screamer or a yeller.

besides, he happens to be great in person. When I told him he was the greatest singer, he look really humbled at me and say thank you in a way that I felt it was true. Great man.

DT without Labrie: no DT for TheT anymore...

he's not my favorite but he's definitely good, and the sound wouldn't really work with anyone else.....his vocals on Systematic Chaos are some of his best in a long time (barring The Dark Eternal Night at parts, but, c'mon......c'mon)

He's not the worst singer in the world, he's not great, but there's worse. He can't do the softer stuff at all, and he hasn't been able to do the harder stuff all that well since images And Words, but he's still listenable.

Anyone from Australia see them live this year? He actually sounded great live, not just fairly good, but really great, far better than any of the live recordings I've heard.

He is certainly quite good, not my favourite but more than  OK, but his bandmates not always find the right music for his voice.  I think this thrash metal-like music is not his thing at all, his best moments are the more melodic ormore classic prog oriented pieces.

Dream Theater is as far away from thrash-like as is possibly imaginable. As proven by his awful sound on the Metallica bootleg, that's a good thing.

Dude, I went to the Melbourne gig tooBig%20smile

The whole band played incredibly well, and you're right about Labrie, he was  in seriously  good form that night and easily topped any of the live recordings.

I don't see how anybody could listen to Awake and say that the man isn't a great vocalist. But i do agree that his voice does not suit DTs ballsy direction. It's just not a ballsy voice.

yeah, his little James Hetfield impressions scattered throughout (mostly on Train of Thought) don't work very well

I've always had a love/hate relationship with his voice; in the studio his voice is terrific, live, it can be hit & miss (but face it, this is true with most vocalists)...

...they really should have done some overdubs on 'Once In A Livetime' though

^^^ I thought I was the only one who noticed that! Is it just me or do the vocals on "Voices" sound really terrible
on that album?? It's weird too because all their other live releases have been quite good. I do like him a lot
in the studio though.

I agree that the recording you mention is his worst... The man had throat problems.. but check "Score" and you'll listen a much better live voice Big%20smile

Aside from Dream Theater generally boring me, James seems to have no low range at all. It's rather grating.

Definitely among his best.  I caught that tour in Philadelphia, it was the night before the Radio City show.  Smile
