I recently came across Greg Ginn on a sampler for his own label SST. Best known as the leader of Black Flag, a punk band, he appears to have developed a highly distinctive guitar style. He's worked under a wide variety of names, including HOR, Fastgato, The October Faction, Gone, Confront James, EL BAD, Mojack, The Texas Corrugators, Jambang.
The last of these, Jambang seem to my ears to be highly suited to the jazz rock/fusion sub-genre, the tracks on the sampler being a mixture of guitar virtuosity and improvisation.
Anyone else come across Mr. Ginn? What are your thoughts on his eligibility in one or more guises?

Greg Ginn is definitely a prolific musician and a distinctive guitarist, I cant say that I like all his projects, I really enjoyed Gone for a while there, Im still more partial to the later day Black Flag albums though ,

I used to really get into Black Flag when I was young, their 5 piece version with whats-his-name on rhythm guitar and Chuck Biscuits on drums was incredible and easily the most powerful hard rock band I have ever seen. Their music had a lot of barely disguised prog influences (Mahavishnu, Crimson etc), especially for a hardcore band. Their live performances were way better than their recordings.
I talked to Greg a little bit back when he was performing with Gone and when questioned he kind of snarled at the mention of Fripp, but claimed to be a big McLaughlin fan. |
