Frogg Cafe appreciation thread

It occured to me (as I was suggesting Waterfall Carnival as one of the most underestimated epics of all time) that these guys get absolutely no love here.  Show your affection!  Let some people know that purchasing albums they have put out is a worthwhile effort to stimulate the economy and lower gas prices! 

They were instrumental (and vocal too) in getting me to realize prog was still very much alive  when they made some free songs available on the web.  I got into them hearing "While You Were Sleeping," "Candy Corn," and "Deltitnu." and thought they were a little derivative of Zappa (not a bad thing at all).

I have the album Creatures and it's very good. There's still a bit of Zappa influence but also some Gentle Giant influence and a lot of their own unique sound.  The vocals are powerful and distinctive.

Highlights for me include the song "Creatures,' very complex.    "The Celestial Metal Can" is way out there and quite creepy at times.  "Gagutz" borders on a genre that used to be called acid jazz, mixed with some great fusion guitar and a little symphonic prog thrown in too. 

So they're quite a versatile band while still retaining their own recognizahble sound.  You are right -- I should buy more from this band.  With the advent of the web and forums like these, I spend way too much effort looking for new groups when I barely know the really good established ones.
 

Anybody who needs popularity is more than welcome to listen to Brittney Spears instead.

i want to get into this band, but i'm having trouble finding any of their albums...

Frogg Cafe is great.  They fit into a fusion/jam band feel.  They orginaly were a Zappa cover band so that influence is great.  I was fortunate enough to see them at Calprog in 2007 and they did a great set.  Lots fo style and tempo changes with great use of vioin and horns.  I think a CD that speaks to all sides of them and that is also performed live is The Safenzee Diaries.  It is a good place to start.
