Thanks to axisus at the Drum Forum, the band has been identified as Fermata. The album is Piesen Z Hol, from 1976. Thanks everyone for your interest.

That is quite alright. I appreciated your interest in the mystery ! The thing is I had 2 of their albums, and I ought to have known......
I already had Huascaran and Biela Planeta, but their style seemed to shift from one album to the next.
Piesen Z Hol has the studio jam kind of feel, whereas Huascaran is much more polished but is maybe not so exciting.
I have many more 'mystery bands' from the late 70s and early 80s on tape, but if I post anymore they will be one file in medley form.
Thanks.
BTW, there is a violin on the album after all ! Edited by mr70s - August 07 2008 at 07:55 |

I have to say I think this album is their pinnacle - every track is so strong. Also the synths sound incredibly rich and warm - when the synths are panned left and right you are bathed in analog heaven ! |

Is this the 2 on 1 CD ? Just thinking, Have you heard Brand X The Lost Sessions ? There's a similar energy to the guitar and keyboards.

it's the 2 in 1. I have 4 Brand X albums. I know about the Lost Sessions but haven't gotten it. Is it that serious? I will get it if this is the case. |

Nice to hear that you like it ! It's one of those albums (like Where Have I Known You Before) that if I listen to a few seconds of a track, I feel I have to continue listening all the way through. The track which faded out after a few seconds on the radio broadcast (Posledny) is an awesome slice of funky jazz rock. And of course, it's great to hear the title track in the quality it deserves. As a guitar player I WANT that sound !
Amazing music from behind the 'iron curtain' as it was then ! Censoring of lyrics drove many of these bands down the instrumental route.
Not heard much of Garaj Mahal, but I have seen a nice clip on Youtube of Eric Levy demonstrating the moog little phatty. Awesome player ! Just him and a groovy bass player - fantastic.

Fermata have some Return to Forever influence, but there's something else to it I cant put my finger on. Both the albums are in my top 5 for most recent favorites!

I have just identified another of my mystery bands ! In 1981 I recorded some great jazz rock fusion from medium wave late at night, when the ionosphere used to drop. The guitar playing put me in mind of a more overdriven Pat Metheny, but less esoteric. It is the Eef Albers Kwartet 'Skyrider'. I think it may have been a live radio broadcast later released on vinyl. Strange to think I was probably recording it 'live'. The band are tentative at first, but the last 3 tracks are wonderful compositions featuring Eef's melodic jazz style which I can only describe as being distinctly beautiful. It's quite different to Fermata, but this is 1981, not 1976 of course. Fantastic nevertheless !

I hope that there will not be a knock at the door for recording a grungy medium wave broadcast in 1981. No one has asked me to share this music, and I have not offered it to anyone. I have not uploaded any music in order that it can be streamed. I care about good music, and artists that should have greater recognition for their work.

Thank you ! Time seems to go so quickly, and I hope that I can still track down the remaining bands.
