I just got the latest CD from October Equus, live at R.I.O. festival 2014. I'm a bit of a fanboy, but it's really excellent. The lineup this time includes Luiz Rocha on bass clarinet and El Pricto (from Filthy Habits Ensemble) on alto sax and they really rip it up in places. Wish I had been there!

Yeah, I too rank HOTV lower than any of the previous three. I much prefer the explosive power of Five Suns and that ilk, rather than this slow burn they presented on History.... There are things I like about it though...and it's by no means bad, but not more than a 3/5 to me right now.

It's never quite up to the standard of 5 Suns but then very little is, to me it's merely outstanding. The DVD makes it worth the buy regardless.

Yes - and it's an album that repays repeated and close listening. I have seen the current line up perform material from it twice and I think it's the strongest incarnation of Guapo yet; Five Suns may be their most immediate album, but subsequent albums are stronger in terms of composition and subtler in terms of performance. |
