Topic: A perfect circle on the archives Posted: September 07 2008 at 18:50 |
I've been pumping these guys up a lot recently, especially Mer De Noms, and besides MJK being their lead singer, they do carry a lot of attributes that mey be called progressive. One of their hit singals, 3 libras, dosent follow the standard verse chorus verse structure of a pop song, and their sophomore album, The thirteenth step, besides being one of the single greatest collection of songs ever, is extremely proggy, not in just songs, but in overall structure.
Yeah, they are a big alt rock band with three or four radio hits, but I think all three of their albums have enough influence to make it here on the archives.
Also if you havent heard 13th step yet, it's honestly my third or fourth favorite album ever made, and was a huge cornerstone to me in my musical life, I cant recommend you this album enough. It made my avvy, it has to be good

I couldn't quite get into either of their albums. They have some great and some good songs, but they never struck me in such a way that I wanted to keep listening to them. That having been said, I think they are prog-related at best.

I used to listen to A perfect Circle all the time, not recently though. But would put them in prog related because their is some prog influence in their music. And their first album Mer de noms is such an amazing album, it was a fave of mine back in the day.

A Perfect Circle is a very fine band and one that I hope returns to making music but I don't think I've ever considered them to be prog or even prog related.

Mer De Noms is a little too poppy to keep in constant rotation IMO.
Who's disapointed with me?

Well I will say that a lot of their stuff is definetely way more creative than most alternative music out their. However, I feel like that it's mostly just an angsty alternative band most of the time that is only creative because a good portion of the band is MJK.
It's hard to say whether they belong here or not. I think they're somewhat prog related. Could we say they're prog related related?

The 13thstep is Maynard at his vocal best.Nothing he does with Tool will ever compare to the emotion he delivers on that album. Rates in my top 10 best albums ever.
Prog related.

Not too keen on them. Not a fan of MJK's voice, and things like "The Outsider" bore me to death.

meh, i say no. like them, but they never did and still dont now that im looking for it, stand out as being particullarly proggy. different yes which i like but still and they bring a creative edge to alternative music but i think it really is a stretch to consider them prog related.

Again...This is not Alternative Archives.
Please focus your efforts in Prog sub-genres, not in barely Prog related bands.
Prog Related bands are an EXCEPTION, but people seem to focus more in the exceptions than in Prog bands.

Please guys,
1.- Being a great band
2.- Making the most beautiful music ever (A bit too much IMO)
3.- Being in your top 10 albums
4.- Delivering emotion
5.- Having SOME Prog influence (If it has)
6.- They belong here (Just that simple)
7.- Not following the verse - chorus - verse structure (The V-C-V structure only defines Pop, but not everything outside Pop is Prog), as a fact not many alternative bands follow the c-v-c structure
8.- Being a big alternative band
9.- Saying it has some Proggy structure without explaining where.
None of this arguments makes even a Prog Related band, why must we add a band that has no importance or transcendence for Prog? Just because we like them?
There are hundreds if not thousands of Prog bands waiting to be added, leave Prog Related for bands that are almost Prog, bands that have the massive support of the members, not bands in which 60% or 70% of the members are against their inclusion.
