....now theres a genreTongue

Just want to recommend this great band from kentucky. Check out the album Z. Also was wondering what some of you thought of bands like Mercury Rev ( Art Rock on PA), Flaming Lips, Sparklehorse to name but a few. The North American contingent really seem to have sown up this category really well. There are so many rewarding bands outthere.

Don't forget Wilco and Bright Eyes for some current day americana...

Actually the MMJ album with the bear is a real killer....some long hard hitting jams....though at times they do have a tendency to Freebird it a little

MMJ is awesome. I love the "singing in a cavern" voice of Jim James. The rest of the band is of course awesome too, but his voice sticks out. It Still Moves is my favorite with Z and Tennessee Fire following.

Mercury Rev is also a favorite of mine. I think what they have been doing is now rubbing off on The F. Lips, only Rev does it better. Although David Fridmann and Donahue were once in the Lips and Fridmann is their regular producer now. Mercury Rev have a new album coming out in the next month or so which is exciting. The last one was fantastic. Such a great band.    Sparklehorse is pretty cool too, their leader produced some songs of my friends band a couple years ago which turned out awesome. Love Wilco too, although they're not new by any means.

However, I despise the obnoxiousness that is Conner Oberst.    Otherwise, way to go America!

I love My Morning Jacket! And I agree with the above, it's all about It Still Moves and Z. Actually, those are the only two albums I listen to. Evil Urges is awaful; I'm really disappointed with them right now.

My friend and I bought tickets to see them in about one week from now, but we bought the tickets before Evil Urges dropped, and when we heard it we immediately regretted having bought the tickets, obviously much of the material would be from that album. Good thing is the show got cancelled and we got our money back!

They're pretty good, a bit too sporadic and flighty sometimes, but when they're focused they're great! At Dawn is a good example.

^Z is a more focused record, not a lot of jamming, more composition oriented.

I haven't heard much MMJ but what I've heard has been good. Mercury Rev and The Flaming Lips are two splendid bands.

They're on the list!

Anyway, I just heard Z and I think it just edged-out At Dawn as my favorite album. Now I want to listen to all of their other albums again (Evil Urges included, if only just for morbid curiosity as I hear it's horrible) to see if they "click" now. I guess after hearing Fleet Foxes first I was expecting something just like them since their vocalists sound identical. My now it's obvious that MMJ is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay more experimental and a more difficult listen.
