Rick Wright has always been one of the great under-rated musicians.  His influence on Pink Floyd in the classic years from 1967 to 1973 was immense.  Certainly IMO his was the most important influence in the sound that i loved about the Floyd.  Saucerful of Secrets beautiful dark brooding sound was largey due to his keyboards and much of the melody that made Dark Side of the Moon was his.

Remember a day before today
A day when you were young.
Free to play alone with time
Evening never came.
Sing a song that can't be sung
Without the morning's kiss
Queen - you shall be it if you wish
Look for your king
Why can't we play today
Why can't we stay that way
Climb your favorite apple tree
Try to catch the sun
Hide from your little brother's gun
Dream yourself away
Why can't we reach the sun
Why can't we blow the years away
Blow away
Blow away
Remember
Remember

Sincere condolences to Mr. Wright's family and close friends.

Pink Floyd was the first prog band to have an impression on me (loved them since age 5) and his keyboard work probably was the major reason why.  Impressionist, surrealist, haunting, weird... I remember some of the sounds he used almost scared me back then, while some other moods were purely majestic.

A Sad day indeed...

RIP Rick Wright.
May you make some new music with Syd Barrett UP there, called Piper at The Gates of Heaven.
My condolences to his family as well. Thanks for the great music.

I wouldn't really say that, since they were's making music anymore, to my knowledge. Still too bad that the generation which made our lives so interesting is dying off now...in perhaps 15 years there may not be any of the classic bands' members left. At least we still have today's music.

I rarely post on this site but I have to record my sadness at this news. I fully agree with those who have said how under-rated Rick was. Dave Gilmour in his heartfelt tribute put the record straight I thought.

My mate told me last night, I didn't even know he was ill!

This is a great loss not just to prog rock fans and the prog community but the rock and music community as a whole.
My deepest sympathies go out to his family an all of the Floyd, he will be deeply, deeply missed!

Shine on you crazy diamond! Have an awsome time at that great gig in the sky!

Us and Them is still one of my fav PF tracks and always makes me cry.

Just heard the news from my mother that heard it recently on the radio.

Sad, I didn't even know that he had cancer. Rest in peace Rick! A very talented keyboardist, who played in an amazing band.

Make his legacy with Floyd live forever!

R.I.P. Richard Wright. Your soul lives on with each note that you ever played, from the soulful B3 sounds on "Atom Heart Mother" and "Great Gig In the Sky" to those rich synth tones on "Any Colour You Like" and "Welcome to the Machine".

Arguably the most influenial rock band in the world, with  a most understated keyboardist . That was Pink Floyd......good night Rick Wright..so many memories.

Sad news.

R.I.P Richard Wright.

I recently read one interview done with him in 1996, when his "Broken China" album was released. He was asked about his relationship with the Pink Floyd members Mason and Gilmour. He said then that they respected each other but that they didn`t have a close relationship. Anyway, with the passing of time it seems that he really had friends in Pink Floyd, because Gilmour in his website said today that he lost a musical partner and friend. I don`t know what Mason thinks about Wright`s death, but I think that he should be sad too. I also read in another website that Waters invited Wrigth to play in his "Dark Side of the Moon" tour but Wright declined the invitation to record a still unreleased new solo album. Wright was underrated by many, but like Gilmour said, Wright recovered his good humour and confidence when he rejoined Pink Floyd. The" Live 8" concert  was a reunion which in my opinion stopped the bad feelings between Pink Floyd and Waters. But why they didn`t play together in Syd Barrett`s Tribute Concert in May 2007?

Like I wrote in this Forum when John Rutsey died, I once again  ask myself: why very good musicians die younger than bad politicians? Why people who brings happiness for many people  with their music die younger than people who lie and kill in search of more power?

R.I.P Cryand thank you for all the joy you have brought to our ears. Big%20smile
In memory of Rick -I think it would be fitting for PA members who can  to make a donation (however small) to a Cancer Charity in your county of residence.

Tragic, i literally gasped when i read the news.  My favorite band will never be the same..

Guess I'll never get to see them complete... then again the chances of a reunion tour were astronomically slim.

It's strange though how the great gig in the sky, dsotm's meditation on death, was primarily composed by rick..
