Topic: C.O.B. (Clive's Original Band): prog folk Posted: September 17 2008 at 23:35 |
This should really be added. Their second album Moyshee McStiff and the Tartan Lancers of the Sacred Heart is a masterpiece of the genre. Clive formed this band with two other members after he left the Incredible String Band. they released two albums, "spirit of love" in 1971 and the aforementioned album in 1972.

Yes, I've heard 'Moyshee McStiff'. I didn't realize they had another album. This band has been on the 'Pending Investigation' list of the Prog Folk team for quite some time. I think there is a bit of disagreement on whether the band qualifies as a progressive folk band (some would say the Incredible String Band is borderline as well but I added them anyway). I'll pass this thread in front of the team and see if we can at least make a decision (one way or another).

Personally I find COB a bit too straight folk for inclusion, but last time I heard their albums was years ago and did so without the "are they prog to fit in PA" state of mind.
i'll rally with the majority with this one. looks like ken also appreciates it fine, so i guess it will be added.

I only know "Spirit of Love" - it's not quite "straight" folk - more like Psych folk with a subtle twist.
It's not Prog folk in the same way Spirogyra or Comus are Prog Folk - it's like a more mellow version of the ISB to my ears. I certainly wouldn't complain if it was added - it's nice music, and should get more exposure, IMO.

To my ears they sound like Synanthesia meets Forest meets Shirley and Dolly Collins.

What do you guys think about the addition of: Mark Fry (Italy, sole album: Dreaming with Alice-1972), Simon Finn (England, albums: Pass the Distance-1969, Magic Moments-2006) and even Agincourt (England, sole album: Fly Away-1970, same band as Ithaca)?

I suggested Chrysalis ages ago - is anyone else familiar with their lone album "Definition"?
If not, I recommend it highly
(actually, it was released in 1968, not 1967 ).

No, what I meant is that Chrtslide is in PA, but not Chrysalis!!! It's not the same group (I checked) (it's also a label)

Yeah, what's the stauts?
Probably my favorite band.
Here's an interesting interview with Clive Palmer about COB. http://www.terrascope.co.uk/MyBackPages/Clive%20Palmer.pdf
"...you finish one project and move on to the next. You change from one album to the next, your influences shift, you feel and think differently"
Clive Palmer.
Progressive?
