I have not seen anything about Strawbs here. Anyone remember them? Their album "Ghosts" is one of my all time favorite albums. There is a song called "The life auction" That is so dark and heavy it just gives me goosebumps every time I play it. This album is just about their heaviest ,and they sound somewhat like Genesis too. I saw them on Don Kirshners "Rock Concert" as a teen. There was another band all you Brits probably know very well, but they are pretty obscure here in the states called "Sparks" I absolutely loved their album Kimono my house. Anyone remember that gem?

Glad to hear that there is another Strawbs fan out there. My personal faves are "forever" - haunting, "the winter and the summer" - beautiful, kinda reminds me of the Yes song "turn of the century" and the Dave Cousins solo "two weeks last summer" - awe inspiring. Thanks for reminding me, I kmow what i will be listening to this weekend. by the way, i remember a friend, back in high school telling me about Sparks and i completely missed them, i will have to check them out. thanks again.

Yeah, I like both Strawbs and Sparks. "Ghosts" and "Grave New World" are the Strawbs albums i like the most. I'm not familiar with their recent work, but it's said to be rather weak compared to what they did in the 70s. Sparks were one of my favourite bands when I was a teenager. Their latest album "Lil' Beethoven" (2002) is surprisingly good. Actually, I rate it as high as their albums of the golden era. But their obscure self-titled debut album is still their best imho.

And do you realise Sparks aka the Mael brothers are American?

Saw The Strawbs at NEARfest. They were awesome! Dave Lambert was a killer on guitar. That streak of white hair makes him a unique looking individual. But, is he a wild man. They played all of the best tracks from 'Ghosts', 'Hero and Heroine', 'Bursting at the Seams', and 'Grave New World.' The best was when they played 'Autumn' from 'Hero and Heroine'. Absolutely perfect!

'Hero and Heroine' sends chills up and down my spine . Im going to check out more of these guys for sure.

Sparks.Try to hear their first two albums;Sparks and A Woofer in Tweeter's Clothing.Poppy/Prog in places.One of the albums,can't remember which,was produced by Todd Rundgren.

Strawbs.From the Witchwood is my favourite.Wakeman plays some beautiful mellotron on that album.

Do 'The Stanley' otherwise I'll thrash you with some rhubarb.

The Strawbs are actually mentioned quite frequently on the forum, often in "favourites" type threads. Try doing a search of the forum for the band name (change the search in to "message body"), and you'll find plenty.

Great band by the way.

one of my favorite bands, i dont know why i dont bring them up all that much

Down by the Sea is probably the most intense song they have done

check out the DVD they recently released, i think it is a show from 75' live in japan, the Ghost tour i am sure, it's very enjoyable, good atmosphere

He did indeed Alan. It was while with the Strawbs that he came ot the attention of Yes. "From the witchwood" was his last album with the Strawbs. His organ work on tracks like "Hangman and the papist", and "Sheep" still sounds great today. The live "Antiqies and Curiuos" album gave him the best opportunity with the band to demonstrate his skills, including the solo piano track, "Temprament of mind". He also "guests" on the "Dragonfly" album.
