Some bands with common names coming up. The latest Flock (a free form UK nu jazz group) and the original (?) Flock with Jerry Goodman. One of at least 3 Southern Comforts, this one from 1971, sounding somewhere between Electric Flag and Taj Mahal. Other rock from 40-50 years ago: Elephant's Memory (John Lennon's NYC backing band), the Latin rock of Chango. A brief celebration of the late Vangelis (more scheduled next week). A continued listen to the best prog album of 2022 by Hats Off gentlemen, It's Adequate. Super folk by Katie Spencer. Reruns of old material by Todd Rundgren/Daryl Hall, Blue Floyd, John Scofield, Heart, Kevin Gilbert, Chicago/Al Green, Flora Purim, Graham Nash. Enjoy.

Slightly more jazz related tunes than the norm nowadays, and several of those favorites, including UK-based Scott McGill (up twice), Fuze, Adam Holzman, Conrad Schrenk, Buggie Wesseltoft. From the archives: a return to CTA, Santana clones Chango, Amboy Dukes with an 'interesting' question (answers please to this address), and the Stones in the 60's. Blues rock recordings made early on by both Stevie Ray Vaughan and Govt Mule. Disco of sorts by Paul Gilbert. Of course some prog rock. Robert Fripp, Flea and some of the Mother's wind section, together exploring the Arabic rock of Rai. And more.....

Pleased to say that I have a copy of the forthcoming album by Hats Off Gentlemen, Its Adequate, 'The Confidence Trick': its the best prog I've heard in 2022 (thanks Malcolm for sending me a copy). Therefore a couple tunes tonight from it.
Listening to last week's show as it went out ,found I had featured a little much avant garde, so tonight's collection of tune is more centre field. Yet more of the French band Bess Of Bedlam who are into their version of 'Anglo-Saxon music'. New releases from Tigris ('Ethio-fusion'), The Trackers, Melissa Weikart, electronica by Peter Coccoma, the distinct sound of +1 (Kim Sajn), Ann Wilson tackles old Robin Trower and Robin Trower tackles new Robin Trower, gamelan rock from Balungan, Bantu soul by Batila, then Gyasi (said to be a cross between Bowie and Bolan). And the old: a couple from The Grass Roots, The Jam Factory, Elephant's Memory . Finally artists from between the late 60's and now - spot them here: ALTERNATIVE ALTERNATIVE SHOW 12th May 2022, broadcasting from 9.00pm BST Time | Artists/Band/Musicians | Track Name | Album Title | Genre | Label | 4.44 | The Trackers | Nisco | Vanderville 8.45 | Jazz Fusion | Abstract Logix | 3.07 | Gyasi | Burn It Down | Pronounced Jah See | Rock | Alive Naturalsound | 2.33 | Melissa Weikart | Here, There | Here, There | Rock | Northern Spy | 4.22 | Jon Hassell | Warm Shift | Maarifa Street: Magic Realism 2 | Nu Fusion | Label Bleu | 2.50 | Batila | Blacklove | Tatamana | Bantu Soul | Galileo | 6.22 | Steven Wilson | Home Invasion | Hand. Easter break done, we return with another 2 hrs or so of a variety of music, old and new. Multi-talented Gary Husband's band The Trackers, with a limited edition take of a Radiohead tune. A French band, Bess Of Bedlam, who has intrigued me with their take of Anglo pop rock. Another new remaster of a Family album. 40th Anniversary edition of Rush's classic album' Moving Pictures'. Hollis Brown attempts to cover the whole the Stone's 1968 album 'Aftermath': worth listening the origin? Future releases from Joyful Talk, Saajtak, Doris Brendel, Columbian band Mirlitorrinco. Reissues as digital downloads only, from Pollution and Little John. And just over 50 years Taj Mahal and Ry Cooder record together again.

Some years ago I felt compelled to create a list of violinists in popular music, after being told there were only a few. I stopped at list of about 200, and guess since I could add at least another 30: that list is buried somewhere in Prog Archives. So tonight I give you a show dedicated to violinists/fiddle players, 28 violinists in total across 25 tracks: blue grass to chamber rock, blues to jazz. Electric and acoustic violins, the Norwegian folk hardanger violin to the Indian double necked 10 string. Some obvious musicians, perhaps some unexpected and some definitely obscure - all worth checking out.
This is the last ALT2 Show before the Easter break but back again at the end of April. Don't forget there are separate streamable shows archived at the Album Zone, worthy of checking out.
And also for our N. American listeners: the UK has gone to British Standard Time, and we might be 4 hr ahead of EST and 8hr ahead of PST, unless you guys also put your clocks forward last weekend????

The penultimate show before the Easter break. Mix of old and new. The old being the Marshall Tucker Band, Morgan, Blossom Toes and Andy Fraser. Welcome back to the Syn and Half Man Half Biscuit. Various takes on jazz from the Smudges (or are they playing modern serious chamber music???), Melt Yourself Down, John McLaughlin with Mahavishnu, Ogun Afrobeat, Stian Lundberg (big hints of Elephant9). Various world music from sl*g., Dawda Jobarteh. Then the prog from the aforementioned Morgan and Syn, Marillion, Flower Kings.
The last show, (going out on 31st March 2022), has been pulled together and is devoted to violinists. Also note, UK clocks go forward 1 hour this weekend to British Summer Time (BST), which I guess puts us 4 hours ahead of EST for a few days.
Enjoy

Tonight a couple of tunes from Volume 2 Of Gary Lucas & Peter Willems EP 'Double Dare'. Also a couple of tunes from +1's (aka Kimare Sajn) forthcoming(?) double EP 'Sideways Immersion'. West coast 60's psychedelia in the forms of Peanut Nut Conspiracy and Strawberry Alarm Clock. German punk and rock and then established blues players. Brazilian rhythms from Airto. More from the excellent Bird In The Belly's new album. Of course some jazzy sounds. And the inevitable progressive rock from Marillion and Dream Theater. Check out the new sound of Turbo World's 20K.

Many thanks for your interest. My weekly Alternative Alternative Show coming out of Loughborough Campus Radio (LCR), is now (officially) in its 35th Year, and I have retained recordings for at least the last 10 years output. When I remember, I will post 5-10 recent show recordings to those who request them... next due around Easter. If you send a link to the show's email address: I can include you in the mail out list.
I also do a monthly ALT2 Show (plus a few specials) for the Album Zone site, where they persist in calling it the 'Dick Heath Show'. At the Mixcloud/Album Zone site you'll find streamable show recordings, since I've been with them (about 4 years). In addition new shows first go out via two web radio stations, scheduled to fixed dates and times, e.g the belated broadcast of the February 2022 show: 8pm GMT 15th March 2022 via TWCfm, Nottingham (The Wireless Company) 9pm GMT 24th March 2022 via RTI (Radio Tatras International)

Hi Dick, just bookmarked your show page and I'm looking forward to listening to it. I was wondering if more recent shows will be added in the near future?

A jazz rich show, with several of it variants. Indo jazz features twice, with Sonny Singh and the duo Jens Pollheide & Imran Khan, nu jazz from Melt Yourself Down, electro jazz from Mark Guiliana, acid jazz from Brian Auger, metal jazz (?) from Red Kite, ECM jazz from Avishai Cohen. The band that came up with my favorite album 2020, Brighton's Bird In The Belly have a new one. Blues via Nine Below Zero, Ilana Katz Katz, Jean Paul Bourelly. And of course some prog.

A certain relative introduced me to the music of Imogen Heap two weeks ago, so I play some here - although there was a belated realisation that she had worked with Jeff Beck. Oh, Chris also reminded me of Roy Harper. Elsewhere, jazz from Jon Hassell, The Triggering Myth (Scott McGill guesting), Dan Berkson. A continuation of dipping into Warren Zevon albums. Blues from Savoy Brown, Keef Hartley and Govt Mule. There is folk and garage. Join me at 9pm GMT tomorrow

Enjoying the Mark Lockheart's new album - in Derby early summer so a show to catch - the former Loose Tube and Polar Bear man delving into modern day psychedelia. New blues from Tinsley Ellis and Keb' Mo, old from Allman Bros. Archive raid for Warren Zevon (more next week), Merry Clayton, Traffic, Loadstone. Blind Lemon Jefferson on a new blues compilation - when will they find a recording free of surface? A band that fuses stoner rock and heavy jazz fusion?? Another special delving through the sector in archives, labelled '1975'. The period of just before a major popular music upheaval, when there were increasing grumbles about the rock dinosaurs dominating the music industry and the old rock'n'roll ethos having disappeared. British punk was stirring - the argument here being you could play great music with only a handful of chords, so who needs virtuosity - while the North American scene was more stable. So tonight's show sets out to play the variety of music heard back then.
In addition, a brief tribute to T2's Pete Dunton who died a couple of weeks ago.

Just read an enoyable book '1971, Never A Dull Moment' by David Hepworth, he of the Old Grey Whistle Test TV show and editor of various music magazines. Hepworth sections the book into 12 chapters, respectively January to December 1971, in which he outlines society and it development/changes whilst largely concentrating on the 'best' albums released during each of those months. This had me rethinking about previous couple of years, 1969-70, during which I believe significant experimentation and change went on amongst musicians, that result in these classic albums released in 1971. but obviously many musicians failed to evolve successfully, than those that succeeded. Hence this show sets out to play a variety of popular music to demonstrate changes, the asociated melting pot that became the heavy rock, jazz, folk music, progressive rock, electronica etc we continue to enjoy... and some that little/no impact.

A belated Happy New Year. I hope everybody had a good Christmas break. Tonight's show included a couple of raids into the archives to find bands long forgetting. Some albums from 2021 and a lot in between. Belatedly discovered one of bands of the early 70's never to achieve fame and fortune, but made one of the best rock albums back then, have got that album properly remastered and reissued in 2021, i.e. T's 'Boomland' record. The only tune they wrote and got covered by Landberk, plays us out. .Working on next week show, and it will be completely music released in 1969/70, as a sort of prequel to David Hepworth's book of 'musical social history' book , '1971: Never A Dull Moment' - a recomended read. In passing a new show, Dick Heath's ALT2 September 2021, can be streamed via the Album Zone, adding to the monthly shows going back 3 or more years.
