Almost off the Norwegian thing - but not quite yet. The first 30 minutes of the show is dominated by sax, including Umezo Kazumo Kiki Band, (the best thing I've heard from Japan for some time), and  Francesco Bearzotti et al who have fused familar Theolonius Monk tunes with familar rock riffs/rhythms - rather brave, with what to me seems to be somewhat hit/miss as a concept, (working IMHO ~30% of the time). Tributes to Bob Brozman and Richie Havens.  More blues also, from Taj Mahal off the new Hugh Laurie album, and Savoy Brown (with a personal favourite, Chris Youlden on vocals), and (40 years late) a brief dip into a compilation of Canned Heat's Al Wilson's music.

After several weeks mostly promoting new recordings and/or musicians new to me, this week I head into the archives for all but three tracks (those by Daddy Long Legs - stripped down blues - Motorpsycho with Jaga Jazzist's horns, and Bill Nelson). A couple of long ones from a favourite nu prog band RPWL; whatever happended to California Transit Authority (approximates to early Chicago meeting Tower Of Power?), and many other slightly familar or not familar-at-all music.

More delving through the archives for this week's records, teasing out some familiar tracks that sound be aired annually - so a couple of classics from the post punk period - when certain musicians appeared to be "progressing" beyond the simplicity of punk rock. Least we forget: Battles and their variant of electronic math rock beforre the apparent innovative driving force Tyondai Braxton (Anthony's boy), left - and what he did afterwards.... Fun from the late Vivian Stanshall. And new bands to me: Vangough and Solis Lacus are sampled.

"Them Changes" as a title is definitely grammatically incorrect  LOL I hear this "them... something" every day, I might start adopting it... proper Yorkshire

Hi

alas I've discovered that a cd I compiled with several tracks for tonight's show won't play in the studio - so no Van gough and instead a slightly altered programme from the above play list

After self-induced problems with a faulty CD collection not working in studio players last week, lesson learned. Newies from Tzadik label, in the form of the latest from Metheny and Les (Eng or Fr pronounciation?) Rhinoceros. Al DiMeola with a full album of Beatles' covers. Sad news with the death earlier this week of the Doors driving force Ray Manzarek, so let's have some Doors' music. The prog is limited to Steve Hackett and Kevin Gilbert, heavy rock to Quatermass. Hey got some positive feedback after last week's show wrt Peter Frampton... so another dip into the pre-"Comes Alive" albums (and note, the second Beck track makes an indirect reference to Frampton). Bluesy stuff from Steve Stills, Gov't Mule, Rocket 88 and Paul Lamb etal. Thanks to Susan O'C, some Stickmen. And last but not....  having played the Motorpsycho cover, after a lot of digging Love's original version of "August":

Dipping into both new and old recordings . Surprised to discover Max Middleton has a couple of "solo" albums - the one I'm playing wasn't recognised by Gracenote... - so an opportunity to sample Middleton three times (solo, with Jeff Beck and with The Hummingbirds). Also found Ray Manzarek album - very post-Doors - somewhere betWeen ambient and jazz fusion (sort very chill). Spot the difference with two Chickenshacks/Chicken Shacks. Newie from Larry Coryell - who really firing here. And at last remembrance of local boy Alvin Lee in the form of a classic 10YA tune (pre-Woodstock):

Thanks to Scott for the loan, so samples from the first Ray Manzarek solo album and what a surprising line-up of session musicians. More to make up by not paying tribute to Alvin Lee sooner, dipping into a closet favourite 'Stonedhenge' - which can be an odd mishmash of experiments-in-studio, e.g. psychedelia or 10YA's variant of jazz rock - as well as the expected blues rock. Slow to resurrect one of my favourite album of 2012 heritage Blues Orchestra until now and I still very music like it. Newies  from Jeff Berlin, Trilok Gurtu and Rene Engel. Plus the remastered Primus 'Cheese' album....  then the long "lost" Love album released 40 years after recording.. And my all time favourite Touch from 68 to finish the show off.
