Having suggested there were 2 weeks left during last Thursday's show, I realise now I couldn't count and therefore there 3 weeks left of this season's radio broadcasts. Hurray.

This coming week a couple of tracks from Jeff Beck, showing his versatility on his excellent new album Live +, with John McLaughlin and Muddy Water covers. Nick Drake, artist of (what is left of) the term, features heavily especially for friends in the NW (of England). The NW of the US is represented by Kim Sajn's +1.  This week, a complete track from the new Guapo  3 track album. After wallowing emotionally in Derek & Dominoes' Layla, more of the same from the 20th Anniversary boxset, here Have You Loved A Woman, (I'm sure most of us males have felt those blues). This is one of those major rock albums that should be in all true rock and blues fan's collections. A couple of those "must be played at least once a year tunes" from Crack The Sky and Kings X. After Steven 'n' Seagulls bluegrass take on The Trooper, my favourite version from Hellsong. One of the original jazz rock bands in the form of Fourth Way. The other co-composer's version of the classic White Room. The tune I wanted to play from Zappa's Sheik Yerbouti, Broken Hearts Is For ********* is off-limits here, so a safe instrumental instead from elsewhere on the record. And then of course the usual odd mix.

BTW, talking odd mixes, thank you Susan for the positive feedback sent on Thursday wrt  the tune played from Spooky Tooth & Pierre Henry's 1969 fusion of heavy rock with music concrete electronics on the Catholic Mass. On paper it shouldn't work but it does. Perhaps one reason why record executives  have taken over 45 years to authorise a remaster of this literally progressive record, and one of those great records issues by Island Records in 1969, along with the first Crimson and Renaissance albums

About 28 out 30 shows done for the academic year; here is the probable playlist for the 29th. New material from Mike Gibbs + NDR Bigband + Bill Frisell; Jaga Jazzist in fine form; Jeff Beck is very good live; David Torn with sophisticated soundscapes. Otherwise raiding the archives, for instance with Nick Drake and a couple from Seattle's Precognitive label. A little experiment running back to back different arrangements of the classic rock tune The Trooper.

No. 30 the last show before October? Downloads feature, including the much praised new Scott Henderson, Morglbl, Dennis Rollins and Troyka albums. Several dips into recordings by King Crimson members. Ida Sand has come up with a nice jazz voice album of Neil Young tunes. More from the excellent Jeff Beck Live +. And of course artist of the term Nick Drake, and music from Kim Sajn's Precognitive label.

After a seemingly very long summer break contributing to what has become part of a personal  annus horriblis, I'm back to one element of 'normality': the return of the ALT2 Show. The first show of the season is mix of new and some past favourites. Norway's Rune Grammofon is featured three times, demonstrating the variety of excellent music that label promotes. More blues than normal. Having completely ignored a new favourite record last year, by the Heritage Blues Band, (surely due for a follow up album), which features some powerful blues harp, as does a couple of others, in the form of Lester Butler and Duster Bennet. KoMaRa is a promo from Slovakia sounding like Nils Petter Molvaer playing with King Crimson.... how they find me I don't know but I always welcome promos. Newies from Gary Willis & John McLaughlin (both released by Abstract Logix). Did you read the interview with John Lydon in a recent Classic Rock, interesting filling in some details on musicians on the PIL Album release.. ..apparently here Tony Williams, Jonas Hellborg and Steve Vai along side Johnny Rotten!!!!? And more Bill Laswell, with his treatment of US author William Burroughs' poetry on the Material album. Something from the long awaited new Battles albums, IMHO opinion better than their second album, but again suffering from the lack of treated voice, with the continued absence of Anthony Braxton's son. Enjoy.

Hi Again

The second show of the season and only one overlap of the music selection from last week, that of Norwegian Phaedra, who one related listener suggested made "Trip Folk"... I'm not arguing. The rest is a change. Sons Of Kemet's newie, who won a MOBO prize for their last album, delightfully fusing nu jazz and West Indian  and with two drummers. A new Stanley Clarke compilation allows me to play, I guess, a remastered piece from his second solo LP, featuring Tony Williams, Jan Hammer and  Bill Connors. Snarky Puppy and Skinny Puppy are in there to confuse (at least me). Remasters from Thinking Plague ... thanks Joyce at Cuneiform... and my favourite 90's prog album by Anekdoten. David Gilmour with something more like rock blues, than lumbered with the persistent 'prog' labelling. Whiskey Howl again: excellent early 70's blues from an obscure Canadian band. Spocks Beard continuing to plough the neo prog furrow. Otherwise expect folk to space rock to modern serious minimalism and beyond.

Please contact me during the show with anything especially suggestions for the more obscurer forms of interesting music I might play. Rumours suggest there maybe a new source for longterm downloads of the recordings coming soon. Off to see my favourite bass guitar player tonight, virtuoso Jonas Hellborg, with a rare visit to Birmingham tonight, in the company of a friend of the ALT2 Show, another bass master, Steve Lawson: a brief review no doubt next Thursday.

Next Thursday's tune choices already done, but had time to replace one original choice with the Susan Weinert, prompted by Gary Husband on Facebook. Had to make space for a long piece from the new Elephant9 album... the band sound to becoming more psychedelic than say comparable with Lifetime... but that maybe me. More from the excellent October issues out of Cuneiform Records one of the best labels for eclectic independent music on this planet... and as the BBC keeps reminding "there are other brands",  so I'll add Rune Grammofon for good measure. Some RIO(?) from Argentina in the form of Las Oreja Y La Lengua (will I get the pronunciation right on the night??). We continue with David Sylvain, back as artist of the term, taking a couple of tunes from 'Bees', especially from those occasionally listeners asking for more Sylvian. I continue with the campaign to remind people of Tamla Motown's first white band signing, Rare Earth. BTW who recorded 'Tobacco Road' first, since my memory is clouded with the first hit of song in the UK released by the Nashville Teens? And a first dip into Jean Michel Jarre's latest, with different guests on each track, ranging from Pete Townshend (rather shouty vocals), to Laurie Anderson to Air to Massive Attack.  However, most tracks sound like sources of samples for a rave (like I had to suffer at 110db escaping from the studios, after last night's broadcast around 11.30pm), and ultimately forgettable, (unlike those on Oxygene) - therefore only 2-3 choices worth playing on ALT2. Enjoy.

Continuing to catch up on the releases that came my way over the summer break, especially jazz (fusion). Celebrating an excellent virtuoso performance by Jonas Hellborg a couple of Sundays ago, something from a CD I bought from the man himself. A somewhat surprised at the coming together in the Anderson Ponty Band, but here Jean-Luc adds something fresh to a Yes classic. We continue with our artist of the term, here Sylvian is live with the great Robert Fripp. The newie from Ozric Tentacles the band that links prog and house music? 2 Cellos are great at covers. As promised last week, samples from an excellent live album by Steely Dan recorded in 1974, and only heard as bootlegs previously. And to remind that my former studio colleague, Gren Bartley with his folk band, is appearing in Nottingham early November, something from the album he recorded literally two doors away from our broadcast studio over a decade ago. Time flies Gren.

Some clues as to next Thursday's show.

Been enjoying the Buechi/Haberer collaborative album: Indian influenced vocals and percussion and electronica. Musical friends have provided me with some excellent music, folkist Gren Bartley and avant rocker Kim Sajn (nom de musique +1). And Gary Husband Facebook posted on the anniversary of Jack Bruce's untimely death, a delightful obscurity by an all star line-up... how was this missed originally? A reminder: David Sylvian is our featured musician of the term. Tool man James Maynard Keenan has a newie with his side project Puscifer. Norwegian band, Motorpsycho have just released a retrospective double, covering a couple of decades of recorded music and a must of post-psychedelia influenced rock. Have to mention the excellent recording quality heard from the Wishbone Ash album, the Beeb be praised and check it out on Thursday.

This week's jazz section is mostly world fusion (including a third week of vocal/electronic percussion taken from 'Animata') separated by a couple of modern piano trios who made their names in the 00's. More from that excellent folk album by Gren Bartley. After last week's tirade re near-perfect musical copies, indulging myself with former Krimson men playing the challenge (?) that is 'Larks Tongues'. More from Motorpsycho's excellent retrospective. To reflect Phil Manzanera's range (beyond Roxy Music),  a couple of samples back to back. Also James Maynard Keenan featured twice, including a favourite Tool tune. Enjoy.

BTW listen to the playback of last week's edited show, IMHO the best one so far this term.... info below as to how to link to LCR's archives..
