Many thanks for this link. This is the very footage I remember being shown on UK TV Channel 4 at the end of the 70's/early 80's , included in a documentary of the growth of Australian rock (e.g Midnight Oil, Men at Work). I've never been able to track it down.  This particular performance by Cold Chisel stood out and eventually I managed to buy the excellent double vinyl set 'Swingshift'.

Dear All

First thing to note: UK clocks went back 1 hr this weekend, so we are in GMT for the next 6 months. Gone for several examples of my favourite Swedish keyboard player, Jens Johansson and wish he would do more of these types of music. But then I have troubles deciding whether I prefer Swedish keyboard/drums pairing of the Johansson brothers or the Mats Morgan (Band). Something from Dave Douglas with the ambient rock band (?) High Risk. Thanks to Trev to alerting me to earlier Nicolas Meier. More of my friend Gary Lucas. Dave Crosby  with contributions from members of Snarky Puppy. And then the usual, unusual mix.

The first three tunes, demonstrate the continuing development in nu jazz. Nicolas Maier reinterprets Coltrane as flamenco. Riverside's latest doesn't really do it for me, going for electronica as opposed my preferred metal prog... but.  'EST Symphony' sneaks in  more for the reunion of the former EST rhythm section, as opposed to the lush playing of the symphony orchestra. Something (seemingly a borrow from Love's 'Forever Changes'), from the Bonzo's reunion concert, remembering that the original band's final gig was here at Loughborough. Time to include the Cardiacs again. And finally something from my favourite Johansson bros and Hellborg album,  the neglected 'FT' (apparently Swedish shorthand for 'naked biped').

More untimely deaths of musicians, 2016 is getting bad with that respect, so examples of work by Victor Bailey and Leon Russell. Managed to get the new Umphrey's McGee, so a couple of excellent examples of road tested jam mashes... one joy is this American band getting the SE English accent of Daman Alban right. Another from the orchestrated EST, "EST Symphony". Interesting recent discovery of 70's jazz rock by Synchro. Long time since I played Czech prog band Collegium Musicum... check out the bass solo here dating from 1973. Last sample of Jens Johansson for a while, here with Stratovarius, when IMHO he becomes distinctly average. Also dipping into new albums by Glass Hammer and Dizrhymia.

Inevitably, in a year suffering from far too many deaths of prominent musicians, yet another tribute, this time to Mose Allison. A different Donny McCaslin album to sample... I see his music is labelled 'electro jazz' in some places. Interesting Nigerian influenced jazz  by the award winning Danish band KutiMangoes. Jens Johansson has become our artist of the term, by default it seems, here with Hellborg and Baker (these two appeared on PIL's 'Album'... note this has been reissued, remastered recently ... with extra tracks??). A new Harvey Mandel is welcomed. And thanks to Kim out in Seattle for the PE/Pet+1 album 'Pop'.. Plus lots more:

Apologies wrt this belated posting, I had been waiting for a delivery from Amazon to play tonight and as yet (midday Thursday) that hasn't appeared.

This in fact is my last broadcast before Christmas, and I'll explain by separate message.

As hinted, I had hoped for a copy of Richie Blackmore's 'Live In Germany' release by now. A colleague had seen the band at Birmingham's NEC earlier this year. I had warned to watch out for Jens Johansson,  and the report back that he had been impressive, especially doing those Jon Lord breaks a treat. BUT>>>>> instead to complete the run of Johansson samples as musician of the term, I've turned to something off his heavy fusion album 'Fission', here with Mike Stern guesting. F-word alert: playing The Who version back to back with the original version Mose Allison's 'Young Man Blues'. Separate listeners suggested and then loaned me respectively Ivo Neame and the Beyond Turbines albums for radioplay. I forget who posted the You Tube clip of Morgaua Quartet playing arrangements of  some classic early progressive music tunes, but it was enough for me to buy the albums. So much else worth of comment/references, only at this moment  say: as a fan of RPWL , I grabbed their new recording, which is a reenactment of Pink Floyd's 1969 live show music...i.e. a period when still enjoyed a lot of PF's music..tonight I'm going for a variant of 'Granchester Meadows'.

As you know I'm pleasantly surprised to be back here already, so this unexpected ALT2 Show. As well as the new (actually not that many), I've raided the archives for a few favourites and picked some releases that came out earlier this year that I've enjoyed. And then some to confuse (?):

Snarky Puppy and Skinny Puppy, both interesting but some distance apart musically .

Anekdoten and Anakdota, respectively first albums by Swedish and Israeli prog bands. The former from the 90's adding a heavy edge plus cello to an early 70's Krimson influence. While one review suggested the latter are cross between Genesis and Gentle Giant, I beg to differ. Instead, in my search to find a so-called prog bands that actually 'progress', I suggest the recently released Anakdota album refreshingly does.... and its been quite some time since recommending RPWL as a literally progressive band.

Decided that Gary Lucas & Jan Klose's 'Stereopticon' is the ALT2's folk album of the year, I simple keep going back to listen.  But I've got to put in a word for my folk tune of the year, beit a couple of years after its release, Gren Bartley's 'I Am Home'. I hope to get Gren on the show soon. While Bent Knee's Cuneiform release 'Say So' is our rock album of the year, I've been impressed by their early album, 'Shiny Eyed Babies'.

I suppose my 'pleasant surprise of the year' was discovering Japan's Morgaua (string) Quartet's interpretation of some prog rock classics... having had quite a few enforced hour to listen deeply, personally I find two tracks off this album sound violin screechy, but the rest of the arrangements really do it for me.

BTW that new Rolling Stones album is a real enjoyable throw back to the music they covered and played in the beginning of the 60's.

Finally the saddest thing whilst resting in a hospital ward last Thursday, was to read that Gregg Lake had died of cancer. Hence the  tribute.

Happy new year to all my friends old and new, especially those after some time of non-contact, make up their minds to make contact ... please try.

Inevitably have to spend time remembering the powerhouse fusion drummer Alphonse Mouzon and his music, whose death from cancer was announced just before Christmas. Early word on the internet by those lucky few who have checked out the web-streaming of the album by Wingfield Reuter Stavi Sirkis, 'The Stonehouse' (out mid February), is that already this is the best best jazz release of 2017..... thanks to label owner Leonardo for providing the promo. The darling of international jazz magazines in 2016, Kamasi Washington, has a new album out playing with the interestingly named band, Throttle Elevator Music. My favourite PIL album has undergone remastering and the addition of 3 new CDs of recordings, (amazingly for me, there is a cover of Zeppelin's 'Kashmir' included); tempted by various of the new recordings (e.g. the Ginger Baker dominated/Vai muted remix of 'Ease') but gone for something off the original remaster. The Rush '2112 40th Anniversary' issue seems rather a mess once you get passed the remaster of the original album (CD1), but check out Steven Wilson's cover from CD2. More from my belated discovery of 2016, Anakadota, with IHMO rare new progressive music that is pushing the boundaries. Some modern Argentine psychedelia from a free download!!!! issued by Vlad Tepes, rated by a couple of reviewers as one of the top 20 releases of 2016. We finished by dipping into

the modern serious music/minimalism catalogue.

Scanned a few of your charts. Very cool to see Jens Johannson pop up a number of times! Fjaderlosa Tvafotingar, Heavy Machinery, Fission and (Mastermind's) Excelsior! all occupy permanent spaces within my collection. Thumbs Up

Coming a few days after my birthday, this programme is a celebration of good musics. Another new release from the excellent Moonjune Records, the world fusion of Tohpati. One of those 2016 top 20 album in the form of Jack DeJohnette et al's 'In Movement'. Thanks to the folks at Djam Karet for their new release. And thanks to Sid Smith to the introduction to London's Firefly Burning and their refreshing fusions with rock. More excellent folk music from Gren Bartley's 'Winter Fires' album. And there are samplings from other albums played recently. And we finish with a sample from another album by Japan's Morgaua Quartet, playing an excellent arrangement of early Genesis music.

I'm a great fan of the Johansson brothers, although can't quite make my mind up whether Mats Morgan or the Johanssons are my favourite Keyboard/Drums combination. Admittedly I think Jens is wasted in Stratovarious, and felt he was restricted in the recent live Rainbow recordings. Jonas Hellborg seems to bring the best out of them

I've been waiting for this one. One of my favorite bands of the last 25 years!

I concur. It's a paycheck. I'm not a fan of the band.

I prefer the Johannsons to Mats & Morgan. All are tremendous players but I simply like Jens' records better.
