Alternative Alternative Show Holdsworth Specials.docx

The show for the 11th is loaded with either new releases or a few albums I've purchased recently. Diamond Dust had been recommended by En: this is a band from the SW of England who specialise in  rearranging and playing  John McLaughlin compositions. In passing 4 of the 5 starters have links to Tony Williams (New) Lifetime. Only discovered the Jack Bruce album after reading something about John Surman recordings of the early 70's : this line-up was a surprise to me and the 3CD set is a real bargain at Amazon at the moment. Jain is French singer I caught on Jules Holland's programme two Fridays ago: interesting pop infused with Afro sounds. Prog from Doris Brendel, Procol Harum and Isidurs Bane with Steve Hogarth. A short mention of Col Bruce Hampton, who died recently on stage. And something from my favourite NW USA band +1 (aka Kim Sajn).

You'll notice a number of Cuneiform Records releases, new and old. The new from an interest Swiss nu jazz group The Great Harry Hillman, French avantists Miriodor, and a welcome release (after a long time since the last) Bubblemath. (Also something from the previous and first Bubblemath release). The older releases from Led Bib, and the Mats Morgan Band. Thanks to Mike, aka Adult Cinema, for providing his recent album 'Teaser Trailer', a variety of interesting rock arrangements, which reminded me of that intense experimental period 1969-1972 (i.e. between 'In The Court of' and for instance, the classic Yes and Genesis albums, when boundaries were being pushed, i.e. progressed literally). Thanks to Ana Patan, for her new release. Must mention the triple CD set of Jack Bruce at the BBC, a recent discovery with line-ups not heard on disc elsewhere. And then the recent remastered Patto second album, 'Hold Your Fire'.... deliberately gone for two tracks featuring the great Ollie Halsall playing vibes, with which he gave both Patto and earlier Timebox that attractive jazzier edge.

En wrote me suggesting we should have a show featuring tracks by musicians influenced by Allan Holdsworth. So about half dozen tunes that approximately fall under that heading.... and I have to state immediately, most of these guitarists have developed their own individual playing styles... and I'll leave you to work out who. More from a couple of excellent new Cuneiform releases. My other favourite original guitarist and friend Gary Lucas, features demonstrating his range. And that other very recent Patto reissue, the eponymous album, with additional tracks.

A few more weeks left before to the end of term, and the usual summer break. However, plenty of interesting music, new and old, to play. What has become an increasing regular feature, playing a tribute to musicians who have just died, this time regretfully,  Gregg Allman vocalist and keyboardist of the Allman Brothers. Also continue featuring Allan Holdworth. More from my favourite prog album to date in 2017, Bubblemath's 'Edit Peptide'... the Cuneiform press release suggested echoes of Echolyn, Mike Keneally, Umphrey's McGee, and others. While agreeing to some extent, Bubblemath bring a refreshing original feel to a field that can too often sound stalely derivative. Slowly hearing the differences Steve Wilson has brought remixing Chicago's second eponymous album. More from recent discovery Finland's Superfjord and their new psychedelia. Plus lots of other goodies.

A few new releases but decided to delve into the archives for most of the music for Thursday night. In part I lost a friend just 2 years ago, and as we shared a lot of music in common, so I'm at last dipping music we enjoyed together. Thanks to Trev for the loan of the UK recordings, which are both hidden on either expensive boxsets and Japanese imports. Also thanks to Marco Anderson of Foxy Productions for the jazz by Jazz Gnats Electronique and The Bird Architects.  Finally have you noticed too  several tunes are included, fusing world music  with other forms.

I read that 47th Anniversary of the release of Machine's Third LP was last week, so a chance to play a favourite of good length, 'Moon In June', which in turn was the source of the eclectic record label (we have something from the new Machine Mass album from Moonjune Records). A couple of new tunes from Bent Knee -  who have moved away from Cuneiform to Inside Out Records. Also a newie from The Tangent. As to the rest? A little complaint came last week from a listener that we weren't being eclectic enough, I trust the mix meets his (or her) and of course your approval this week.  Finally, with the university's academic term finishing on the 21st June, this show in theory should be the last until October. However, we are hoping putting at least another one together for next week. Further, talking with Jack, our senior engineer, there is a probability that a number of past shows some going back to 2013, will play on our sustain service at 9pm Thursday night through the summer break, and for our American listeners repeated, i.e. aiming at sensible times for the east and west coasts... more news when and if this is sorted.

Several Soft Machine related tunes, largely from individual members, Wyatt, Ratledge, and both the Hopper brothers. Had a request for more Wayne Krantz, so duly obliging. And I would suggest 5 tunes here are  fused with world music to a greater or lesser extent.

I have been promised the studios will be open tomorrow evening for a live broadcast...still keeping my fingers crossed this will be true. However, the studios will closed evenings from next week, with student vacation time for approx. three months. Instead I hope to get in during the daytime and record a few shows available for download. In addition our BBC trained engineer has 24 recordings of the ALT2 Show from 2013 and 2014, which will go out as repeats at 9pm BST Thursdays from next week. Repeats are already going out early Monday morning at 3pm BST, aimed at west coast listeners when we have assumed it to be 7pm Sunday local time. I'm hoping for a repeat to be broadcast at 7pm east coast time soon.

Several listeners have asked about streaming the recordings. We had a system 3 years ago which collapsed 6 weeks after it started. I'm informed because of copyright issues I can't use any other streaming system.

This is the first of several ALT2 Summer Specials I plan to do through the next few week. It will be broadcast at the usual time on Thursday, however, as an edited recording. I will be contactable via the this email system, but with my feet up at home!

Only a couple of new releases here, the excellent new Bent Knee album and an Estonian band X-Panda. Otherwise a couple of albums that came my way over the last 9 months, e.g. the excellent Advent album. Then I'm being indulgent while trying to be eclectic, with a large number of artists playing materials you should have heard here before .... if you have been a long term listener.

A reminder. If the station continues to broadcast with an absence of personnel, you will be able hear recordings of ALT2 Shows broadcasted several years ago, at the usual Thursday slot. Then other already broadcast ALT2 Shows will go out at 3am (Sat/Sun) aimed at regular listeners on the west coast of N America (i.e. at 6pm west coast time), ditto at 11pm Sunday (i.e. 6pm east coast time).

Engineering worked well last Thursday, allowing the broadcast of our first ever recorded ALT2 Show and we continue with more this coming Thursday (please note what is detailed below was recorded last Thursday morning). BTW if you haven't received the link to download that recording let me know asap.

The new Django Bates' "Saluting Sgt Pepper" had only just arrived so had to be added at the last moment. As ever we support the indie artists in the form of British soul and reggae group Brother Strut. Likewise with Marco Anderson's Jazz Gnats Electronique. A couple of odd balls where musicians augment TV or film soundtracks with their music, i.e. Marcus Minnemann and the second of the Conrad Schrenk tracks. We kick off with the latter's "Save The Robots", along with Hellborg etal's "Octave Of The Holy Innocents", my jazz fusion albums of the 90's. Neglected Canterbury flavoured Machine & The Synergistic Nut for too long. And coincidentally to Tom's latest broadcast in US, reminded of violinist Caryn Lin. Then many other gems hidden in the darker corners of the archives, underplayed by your's truly and many other DJs.

Invited my friend, listener and former student, Mark Lay, who lives relatively local to the studios  to join me. He has an interesting, maybe eclectic or if you like weird musical tastes, so I asked him to pick about half the tunes for this show.  You'll have to wait to the broadcast before discovering who picked what. However, I'll point what is new from me: Polyethylene PET +1, Markus Reuter, Talinka Quartet.

Four new albums included: the recent Christophe Godin etal I've written about elsewhere; the newly discovered Finnish shredder Mr Fastfinger (and friends), the pop rock of Andy Gabbard, and (thanks to Kim), some nice laid back jazz influenced by Scotland from James Lindsay. And more from the latest Bent Knee record. A comparison of King Crimson rearrangements. Coincidentally in the letters page of the latest Jazzwise, published yesterday, somebody complained Paul Desmond had been forgotten. Not by us and remember this show was recorded on the 11th. And to finish, a full version of Magma's DMK; this live version is about 60% of the length of the original studio version however.

A couple of albums listed in the latest edition of Jazzwise's reviews are included. The reissue of Billy Jenkin's 80's album 'Scratches Of Spain', with a stellar cast of young British jazzers, many from the then Loose Tubes; (check out the amusing ad for this reissue on You Tube). And the part spin out from Norway's Supersilent, with the new album from Humcrush: (industrial jazz fusion?). Three tracks featuring unexpected collaborations: Peter Hammill with Spirit's Randy California, Robert Fripp with the Stranglers, and Spooky Tooth and Pierre Henry following the recent announcement of Henry's death. Some avant vocals from Maja Ratkje: thanks Thomas  recommendation. Several favourites appear, e.g. T2, Stray Dog. And we finish with something from the brand new Tangent album.

The only new release comes from New York's post punker Shilpa Ray, otherwise we have been digging deep into the archives. Watch out for the longer tunes too, especially (what is unusual for us) some musical theatre by Heiner Goebbels issued by ECM Records in the 80s.

A reminder: the show of the 10th August will be the last new show to be broadcast until the beginning of October with the studios closing. However, from the 17th August onwards, a recording of an ALT2 Show originally broadcast between 2013 and 2015, (choice left to the computer), will be broadcast at these times:

9pm BST Thursdays

3am BST Saturdays

11pm BST Sundays

(to be reconfirmed)

The two late time broadcasts are for both night owls and those American listeners who have asked to hear something in the evening, and we have already been broadcasting these for over a month.

This is the last new show we are broadcasting before October this year, because of studio closure. However, 50 or so shows recorded between 2013 and 2015 are uploaded to be broadcast Thursday nights from 9pm and there are  different recordings going out early on Saturday mornings and late Sundays evenings, for the time being.

The show for Thursday the 10th this week, is largely music I've discovered, liked most and played since October 2016 (i.e. the beginning of the last academic year here at Loughborough). We kick off with Dinosaur and the album recently nominated for a Mercury Music Prize - note members of Acoustic Ladyland (as Polar Bear) have previously won that prize. A couple of string quartet pieces. The new releases are from Wucan, Mads Mathias, Sabil (I like the oud here), and Honey West. The Humcrush tracks date from 2006 but feature here for the first time on ALT2. Then a couple of newer critically praises prog albums from Isildurs bane/Steve Hogarth  and the Tangent.

First week of term and already the second ALT2 Show of term. Lots of new music, in particular a sneak preview of the forthcoming album by bass whiz Antoine Fafard. Also the new albums from Primus, David Crosby and David Gilmour. After interesting responses last week, another outtake from Sgt Pepper. You guessed: expect the unexpected. And I've invited gary Husband to be our musician of the term, so two tracks selected.
