It has been a sad 10 days or so, with the announcements of the deaths of three musicians. There a fair chunk of the show will be in the form of tributes to Neil Innes, Neil Peart and Wolfgang Dauner. In addition...... Yet another album appears with connections to Snarky Puppy, here Horne Electric Band, where you'll find a variety of guest musicians contributing. Love Jeff Parker's 'Suite For Max Brown', a jazz fusion type I've not met before. Writer Sid Smith is on record saying A Formal Horse's first record is one of his albums of 2019: in Sid I trust. A North Sea Radio Orchestra albums that passed me by with its Spring 2019 release... but a must play with tunes written by Robert Wyatt and most of those originally found on his 'Rock Bottom'. Had to get Patto down from the shelf... the band's Halsall and Halsey also play on the Rutles' album. I think a good 2 hours worth of music to savor.

New jazz from Wayne Krantz, Pat Metheny and Jeremy Cunningham. A suffit of forthcoming releases of electronica. Friend of the show Gren Bartley has an excellent  new album, with a certain world music flavour. DIps into box sets by Dukes Of Stratosphear, Gentle Giant and Frank Zappa. Raided the archives and rediscovered Badger's second album and the lone album by Pure Food & Drug Act. And one more tribute to Neil Peart.

Some new and forthcoming jazz (eg. a sample from the next Necks' album). Two-three experimental rock/electronica albums also here, due out in the next month. Still sifting through the monster Gentle Giant set, and enjoying.... anybody got Ł250 to buy the set rather than borrow?

Sad news came through as I was compiling the show that keyboardist Lyle Mays had died at relatively young 66. So the show starts and finishes with tracks from one of my favorite Metheny/Mays collaborations. Greatly enjoying two albums from my latest Norwegian discovery Moron Police: they do know how to mix different forms of rock within single tunes. Samples from forthcoming albums from London's Hanging Valleys and Uzbekistani Niika. Different forms of  World jazz (I think), from Erlend Apneseth and Majid Bekkas. Dug out a couple of jazz fusion guitar tune classics from 20-30 years ago (that long?) by David Torn and Conrad Schrenk. And some electronica from Tom Jenkinson aka Squarepusher.

New jazz from Gerald Cleaver (an alternative take on electro jazz), nu fusionists Eivind Aarset & Jan Bank, and the great Carla Bley. Beautiful Indo-fusion from Trey Gunn's Deep Fusion Orchestra (and bless him, I got a text from Mr Gunn thanking me for playing a tune tonight). Continuing on my Moron Police binge. And then there are the raids into some of the deepest parts of the archives, retrieving ex Nice drummer Brian Davision's Every Which Way, the (American) Amboy Dukes, the forgotten Byzantium and folkie June Tabor. The Beach Boy and Patti Smith provide some cover versions.

Lots of new jazz including tracks from the heavily praised albums by Pat Metheny, Christian McBride and  Moses Boyd. Surprised (for me) by the entertaining music from the avant rock band Cheer Accident... I think this one sounds like pre rock opera Who. A CD box set from Brett Marvin & The Thunderbolts, whose blues set me dancing in 1970 or 1971 at Royal Holloway Colleges Summer Ball (The Pink Fairies, and Magna Carta were also that there at that time). A new release of a 1977 live recording by Harry Chapin... most welcomed in our household. Would you believe I've only just discovered and enjoyed the Nazz.... Thanks to both the French band Chromb! and Brit band Hats Off Gentlemen Its Adequate, for providing me with promos of their new albums just about out now... very different takes on prog from each band. Some serious ambient (turn your listening devices up loud to catch the nuances) from Michael Vallera  and Nick Storring. And so on

Another mixture of new and old. Also a short reminders of McCoy Tyner and Jon Christensen, who have died recently. New jazz from Glasgow-based Mezcla, drummer Ted Poor and trio Previte Saft & Cline. Zappa does covers. Forthcoming albums by ONO, Hats Off Gentlemen Its Adequate and Bleach Day. Wishbone Ash's 53rd album... blimey. George's mum sings Paul Simon. Then archive material from Tempest, Radiohead and XTC, plus reissues.

Dear All

I hope you are fighting fit and avoiding that virus. Here's something to entertain you tonight in your self imposed isolation. New releases from Shabaka Hutchins, Markus Reuter, Wolfgang Muthspiel and Snarky Puppy. Great African blues from Bai Kamara, and from forthcoming album from friend of the show, +1 (aka Kimara Sajn). The Unthanks being quite traditional. Archive raid (re)discoveries:  the Everly Bros with the Hollies, Them, John Mayall with Peter Green and the early obscure 70's Canadian  band Troyka.

This is the last show of the uni's Spring Term. Hopefully we'll be back in 4-5 weeks time. In the meanwhile there are 8 alternative versions of the ALT2 Show being streamed by the Album Zone (a spin-out of the legendary Radio Caroline); please check them out.

It's been a bad 10 days or so with the announcement of deaths of more notable musicians: therefore the last 30 minutes of the show are devoted to Dave Greenfield, Little Richard and Florian Schneider - all keyboard players. Generosity from the Holdsworth family with the free release of Allan Holdsworth's 'Tales From The Vaults'. Had requests for the James Taylor Quartet and Lavinia Blackwell. Wacky jazz from Sunwatchers. And with a raid on the archives, more from Snake Eye, Red Dirt (with strong connections to Snake Eye), SAHB, Randy Newman and Hummingbird.

I was hoping for happier news this week compared to the last 30 minutes of last week's show. Alas news of the death of Phil May came and so a tribute to his song writing and voice with the Pretty Things. New jazz from Kurt Rosenwinkel, Lettuce and Laura Judd's Dinosaur. Difficult to define music from Immaterial Possession, Thiago Nassif and Lynse & Eilertsen. And a couple of tunes from Kraftwerk artists before they were famous. Then there are 2-3 requests.

Alas can't escape news of musicians' dying at the moment, hence remembrance of Jorge Santana. Several live tracks, Allmans, Bowie, Mike Westerbrook, District 97/John Wetton, Steve Hackett. Fresh take on soul music by Moses Sumney. Great Norwegian folk rock from Kari Rueslatten. Discovery of the 1991 recordings by Randy Greif. Electronic tribute to Kraftwerk. And then much more.

New jazz from drummer Jonathan Barber and guitarist Chris Montague. Raid into the deeper parts of the archives and reemerging with the 70's recordings of British bands Shape of Rain and National Flag. Old favorites from 801 and Arthur Lee. An intriguing album by Caleb Dolister that took 6 years to collate. Very different soul music by  Sam and Dave (accompanied by Jaco Pastorius) and Moses Sumney. And more. Join me this Thursday from 9pm BST.

With the end of the academic year occurring this week at Loughborough, this will be the last ALT2 Show from LCR until (hopefully) October. In the meanwhile the alternative ALT2 Show will be coming from The Album Zone e.g. out of TWC fm approximately monthly. Over 12 past shows can be streamed from the Mixcloud site.

As I was selecting musicians and tunes for this show last Sunday, read the sad news that Keith Tippett had died, aged only 72, I was tempted to find something from sprawling Centipede's 'Septober Energy' but went from the tuneful and tight album from the same period, that kicks off the show. I once saw Keith Tippett as part of Elton Dean's Just Us, here at Loughborough: he spent most of the gig under the lid of the university's grand piano plucking and hammering strings. Otherwise lots of new jazz in the first 30mins of the show: Hedwig Mollestad's newie is worth chasing if you like heavy fusion. Looking back over the last 9 months of releases, so represented by Bird In The Belly (my favorite album of 2019), Moron Police, Nels Kline's Cup, Lavina Blackwell, Hats Off Gentlemen, (a very belated discovery of) Nazz, and another dip into that wealth of Gentle Giant reissues. Other newies from Jobs (seemingly influenced by Laurie Anderson), Dion (does the blues!!), Norah Jones, Bhajan Bhoy.

Hi Everybody

I really hope you are well and avoided the corona virus. Management at LCR have asked me back and this show should go out Thursday at 9pm BST... details below.

Nearly every track is from a new album (spot the odd one out). You will also see the format has changed slightly, with the jazz tunes no longer dominating the first 30 minutes, rather spread throughout. So straight to the jazz: MIldlife, Chick Corea, Randy Brecker/Eric Marienthal, Cindy Blackman Santana/John McLaughlin, David Kollar/Arve Henriksen, and Mark Charig playing with Krimson. Kim Sajn aka Polyethylene Pet/+1, is releasing a very strong set of tunes on an album in December, here's a chance to preview. Phish's Trey Anastastia and his band have a great double album and I've picked a couple of tunes each with a strong African beat flavor. There a merger of Pink Floyd and Spandau ballet musicians, (well one of each), playing Floyd music pre DSOFTM. And so on. Enjoy.
