Though I prefer Olivia Newton John's "Xanadu" (seriously, it's fun, and this being in general music discussion I really thought this might be about that one), I quite like Rush's "Xanadu", but it never really appealed to me (even when I was big on Rush).  I found it kind of pretentious, and just didn't do much for me.  I certainly like parts of it very much.   Off  A Farewell to Kings, I much prefer "Cygnus X-1".

Dude, sorry to ask, but did you ever go by the name Dudelove, Mr. T, or Omega666?

Yeah GREAT song. I love it, the vocals, the climax, the bass, the moog, everything is GREAT! The final guitar solo is just superb!

I will say this, Olivia's a helluva lot sexier than Geddy.  Tongue

Xanadu has always been one of my favorite Rush songs though, just behind Hemishperes, 2112 and Fountain of Lamneth.  I love the opening 5 minutes especially.  Some incredible percussion work by the master.  The borrowed lyrics aren't too bad either.
I can understand your anger at me, but what did the horse I rode in on ever do to you?

I love Rudyard Kipling's Xanadu, but with Rush....
Edit: "Hemispheres", now there's one I love. That was my favourite Rush album too, but these days I prefer Caress of Steel.

I love Caress of Steel too.  As I said, Fountain of Lamneth is one of my favorite Rush songs.  Side 1 isn't too bad either, especially Bastille Day and The Necromancer.

Xanadu is probably one of my favorite Rush songs. I was listening to it once, and I think the reasons I think it's so good is because it has so many musical ideas that go very well together. I don't think it repeats a section until about 6 minutes in, and for an 11 minute song to have a lot of ideas, it's definetely a plus.

I agree with Logan, I am somewhat indifferent to this song.  Great musical ideas, yes, but somehow they  don't seem to flow together.  Off the same album, I like the title track and Cynus X-1 Book I much better.

Great song, but I prefer the version on Exit Stage Left!

cacho, I agree about the final guitar solo. Lifeson at his best!

Good atmospheric beginning, even better when the drums crash in. Nice vocal, excellent drums and one of Lifeson's best solos.

I haven't heard Exit Stage, though I was planning to buy one of their live albums, that one or their previous which I can't remember the name.

+ 1

the song has such an awesome atmosphere throughout, even when its rocking out; and the little synth hook just after he sings 'xaaaaaanaaaaaadoooooooooooooooooooo' always makes me smile. Embarrassed

The live album previous to Exit Stage Left, was 'All the worlds a stage' recorded in Canada in 1976. It's a fairly poor recording in my opinion, although you could say it has great energy, and I'm sure really captures the spirit of the band at the time.

Exit Stage Left is pure quality. It's the album that got me into Rush back in 1983.

I have one problem with that song. The completely random bit of musicality at the end of the atmospheric intro... breaks the immersion so much for me. Otherwise, definitely one of Rush's finest pieces.
