Roman who? yes, sadly this fantastic musician is hardly known among proggers, else he would definitely appear in any guitar poll. he has a unique style with lots of oriental and Arabic influences (he grew up in Beirut as son of a German diplomat)
"Roman Bunka is one of the greatest guitar players I've ever had the pleasure to listen to." --Henry W. Targowski (in Mark/Space , 1996). he is "best" known for his work with Embryo (who are little known themselves). he has also played on a lot of progressive audio plays, like "Goldberg - Ein Dutzend Täuschungen" by Maria Volk. he is also a composer of film music. he is also a virtuoso on the oud, which he started playing some 30 years ago (at least). definitely try and get "Dein Kopf ist ein schlafendes Auto", his first solo album. it is currently out of print, but a 5 star album in every respect in my book; his solo in the blues-part of "Heartbeat" alone is worth the money Edited by BaldJean - October 10 2008 at 06:35 |

here is one I found; it is atypical though since normally he does not use a drum machine. but you can hear what a great player he is:

the recording seems to be one where he just set the drum machine to a rhythm and started playing to it

I saw him live several times in the 70s as a member of EMBRYO - really amazing
Right here at my hometown Herford at our Youth Center ... I liked his jazz rock guitar style with an eastern flavour which can be checked out on 'We keep on' for example I'm not familiar with his later work ... Edited by Rivertree - October 10 2008 at 03:55 |
