Now it's time for me to be evil. Evil%20Smile

The contemporary Zeuhl masters against one of the original 6 Rock in Opposition bands... both manage to create a uniquely disturbing and haunting type of music but in entirely different ways. Which one will continue?

Please: If you are not familiar with one or both of the band's material, I urge that you use the links provided and at least listen to the samples on their respective pages (or Youtube if the particular band has no online streaming).

Koenjihyakkei's PA page: http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=1218
Univers Zero's PA page: http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=342

As always, discussions are encouraged.

I love both bands... but my vote has to go to Koenjihyakkei.

For those who aren't familiar, this is a wonderful link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LHD6UV09pcI

Koenjihyakkei of course. Yoshi's easily as good as Vander, although saying that might get some stones thrown my way.LOL

Two bands I kind of love, from two genres I truly love. But unlike my favorite bands of Zeuhl and RIO (and probably my two favorites of all bands) Magma and Art Zoyd, I rarely listen to a full album by any of them.

Still not that hard: UZ gets my vote. Dense is one of the best tracks ever recorded.

I've just surprised myself by voting for Univers Zero. Confused LOL

Koenji is amazing, and the moment I heard it I loved it.

Univers Zero took me a long while to appreciate.

Both bands' music is the kind in which you hear something new every time you listen to it...

Tough choice, but I picked UZ, I guess because it's more of a hard-won love... it gives me more every time I hear it, in contrast to Koenjihyakkei, which is just as wonderful as that first listen... aargghh, you really do have a knack for these evil tough polls, young master Alex! Evil%20Smile LOL

Both took me some time to appreciate. I'm probably still delving further into my appreciation for UZ, as I love them when I listen to them and am in the mood for it... but don't bring them out nearly as often as say, Henry Cow or SMM.

Koenjihyakkei took me a few listens, but they hit me in an entirely different way. Yoshida rapidly climbed my list of favorite and most inspiring drummers I've ever heard, and he definitely cracks my top 5 now. The sheer dynamic brilliance of theirs, for my taste currently at least, outstrips UZ by a bit.

Time may tell a different story however as I quite like them both. Koenjihyakkei just has that really active edge that I love to hear implemented well in my music (Rush, Ozrics, Magma, Zappa, etc. all in completely different ways).

And yes, I am evil. Tongue

The funny part of these Stardom polls is that they were chosen entirely randomly. LOL

This is cruel! Two of my all-time favourite bands.. My gut's telling me to go with UZ though. Maybe if Koenji comes out with one more amazing album, my vote'll change, but so far UZ have produced a greater quantity of solid albums, and my vote goes with them.

Ouch.

I think I have to go with Univers Zero.
Though I may enjoy Angherr Shisspa more than any UZ album I've heard.

Other people  have expressed how I feel.  For me as well, Univers Zero rather is outdone on the chamber prog front by Art Zoyd, as Koenjihyakkei is eclipsed in Zeuhl by Magma (moreso).  I really like both, and Angherr Shisppa is terrific, bu UZ has more albums that I return to, and I find it rather less superficial.  It has more depth for me.  Took a while for me to really warn up to UZ (which wasn't the case with Present or Art Zoyd); whereas Koenjihyakkei I loved at first listen, but hasn't held my interest to the same extent as UZ.
I turn to my UZ albums more than Koenjihyakkei -- though I turn to Koenjihyakkei tracks often.  I think it was went I got Uzed (already had the earlier albums, and some later ones) that I really got into UZ in a very big way (very accessible album, I think).  Puts on "Triomphe des Mouches" off Ceux du Dehors -- yeah, good stuff. Both rank amongst my favourite bands, but UZ is quite an easy choice for me.

As usual we're on the same wavelength... Wink

(I want to live in a world where Angherr Shisspa gets thrown on at parties, and UZ is played in supermarkets. LOL)

Koenji does seem to have that 'instant appeal' for a lot of people!  (Well, RIO/avant/Zeuhl inclined people, anyhow...)

This is a classic poll, really, because one band is like the ultimate in "Wahey!  FUN!  Woo!  Giggles!" and the other is all like "This will hurt but if you are patient you will come to enjoy it..." Evil%20Smile Wink!

How on earth does one choose?!

"...really active edge..." - I completely get what you mean.  There's just so much going on all at once, like this ridiculously complicated onslaught of incident, and stuff is happening almost before you can gauge what's going on...  I LOVE that in music. Thumbs%20Up

Chosen entirely randomly...?  Like, out of a hat or something, or just off the top of your head?!

Yeah, it's almost like Koenji is full of people who should be locked up in insane asylums or are addicted to caffeine because the music is so in your face every second. LOL

And yes, you are evil. LOL

Don't forgot my evil red sock of doom! Evil%20Smile

LOL

Chosen entirely randomly...?  Like, out of a hat or something, or just off the top of your head?!

What I did was I placed all 32 bands with random placement in a list (whichever came first off the top of my head) and then used a number randomizer to select who would face each other. For example, the first chosen were Mahavishnu and Marillion, so if Mahavishnu was placed in the 15th rank out of those and the randomizer chose 15, then they would be picked. Marillion was then picked out of the 31 remaining bands. I'd simply keep doing that from a smaller and smaller sample size until I eventually was left with two remaining contenders, whom we have yet to see.

Turned out pretty well! Big%20smile
