I really need to hear more material from both of them. I have all of Kayo Dot's material but I've only listened to Choirs and the only Zorn I have is Naked City. No vote from me.

Hmm.

Zorn has 43874598745 albums out, Driver has what, eight?

I guess it's probably Zorn, but mostly because of his early output. If anyone here thinks his music is crazy now, you should listen to the early '80s stuff.

Driver seems to have better focus, though. Zorn does too many things at once, and it shows in his music.

I thought it could be fun ongoing contest even.  Like others, I voted for Zorn,  I might make this a series of "innovative" battles of artists, similar to The Battle of Stardom polls, and then have  a massive showdown.  My next one will involve Miles Davis).

Results thus far: MAGMA's Vander or DEATH's Shuldiner?
Who is the greater innovator in your opinion?

If Miles Davis doesn't win the next battle I might just have to leave PA for good.

Better start packing, I'm thinking about putting him up against Neal Morse. Wink

I like Choirs of the Eye more than anything by Zorn, but Zorn wins out of shear volume of great material.

I feel strange being the fist one voting by Driver at 10-0. Very difficult to me (like choosing between Yoshi and Vander) but seeing Driver very lonely here, I'll give him a drop... I love the Zorn material I have (oh, Six Litanies is awesome) but MotW and KD are my real thing

Nico, I'd probably ask you for a lift if Miles Davis lost.  I could put him up against Frank Zappa, but I'd rather save Zappa for later and put Miles Davis up against Andy Tillison of The Tangent, or someone in Retro Prog.

Well.

I didn't vote.

Zorn is a poncey douchebag of the highest order, musically and personally (and for any who disagree, I'll ask now - how many of you have met the man and/or seen him live - empirical data is the best bellwether)

...and I've never heard of Driver.

So my vote would purely be protest.

I'm glad I don't have to take take his personality into consideration. Musically he ain't no douchebag.

There's some albums by him I really treasure: Mysterium and Magick are both stunning. I also love many of of the albums from his Book of Angels project: Masada String Trio's Azazel, Secret Chiefs 3 Xaphan, Bar Kokhba Lucifer etc...

Toby Driver is a lot younger and gets better and better, so although there's more albums I love by Zorn's 1000 releases, I won't choose.

As much as I like Kayo Dot (MOTW I can't seem to get into), Masada alone blows it away, not even counting everything else he's done.

Apparently Zorn rarely talks to the media because he gets annoyed when they emphasize his anti-semitism card. And anyone in his position would be a little egotistical.

I need to listen to more Zorn... but from what I have heard from him I think I like Driver more
