A special thanks to Peter Hammill for his performance at the Palais Montcalm, in Quebec . . .

WHAT ... A ... SHOW !

Peter Hammill... a real and authentic artist ! PH has offered a really memorable spectacle in the best acoustic hall in Canada. He was never recognized to have a very beautiful voice, but this is precisely what he does with his voice that distinguishes him !.... But, wow, what a PRESENCE ! ...This was the 7 th times I had the privilege to attend one of his tour (first time was in 1974 when he was solo in first part of Genesis) and I realize he is just like a "grand cru" ... he improves with years! (In fact he delivered this memorable spectacle with a single glass of red wine close to him). The intensity and the emotion he delivered on stage, only with a Steinway grand piano and his guitar, are incomparable to any other musician or artist.

The deep silence across the hall all along his show (not even a fly!) testifies of a very special appreciation from the audience!

Really nice work Mr. Hammill, I hope . . . « this will ... come again ! »

AND NOW:     PFM !

It was in 2005 that the last tour of PFM in North America goes up. At that time in Quebec City, the musicians were very astonished by the reception the received (standing ovation for 5 minutes before they started playing). Maybe this is the main reason which led PFM to include Quebec in their tour in 2008. In fact, this time PFM will tour in only 4 cities in North, South and Central Americas: Mexico City, Guatemala City, Toronto and Quebec.

For their show in Quebec City (on November 23, 2008), the group succeeded in obtaining the Grand Theatre!!! (no prog rock show have been presented in this hall, normally reserved for the " serious music " since the '80s). Just imagine, it's like holding a prog show  in the prestigious   "Symphonic Hall" in England!

… I am not a big fan of PFM, but I won't miss that for sure! (See PFM Gig review below)

I just came from the PFM show in Quebec, i don't have words to explain how i feel, i think its the most beautiful prog show i ever saw. Grand Theatre is such a wonderful place to see these magnificent musicians playing with such a technique and emotions combined so well. I'm like drinking the nektar from cosmic rose. Fans were wonderful, the standing ovation before the long comeback was fantastic,  they ended the show with a real grande finale.

PFM Grazie!!!

November 24, 2008 (by Robert Beriau) - Yesterday evening Premiata Forneria Marconi musicians pleased prog fans in Quebec City providing an other great performance. The tour aimed to promote the album ,«Stati Di Immaginazione» (State of Imagination) published in 2006, and helped appreciated the generosity, talent and the complicity of these experienced Italian proggers.

A show like we were accustomed to: no first part, no intermission and 2h30 minutes, and the show ended with a participation of the crowd on their usual «Celebration» («Photos of Ghosts», 1973).

But at the beginning, the show has taken more than 60 minutes before truly "lift-up", partly related that the last album has may not yet crossed the threshold of unconditional fans and also by bad compression settings from the afternoon "sound check" that made the volume too aggressive during attacks from allmost all instruments (even by classical guitar !)…bad decisions because this was the right place, in this hall designed for classical music, to provide an ideal quality sound.

Special moments, however, marked the evening, which among other things with «Il Sogno di Leonardo» where we could enjoy the magical skill of Franco Mussida (guitars) and also later on the song tribute to the singer of AREA, (Italian group from the years 1972-1997), Demetrio Stratos who died in 1979. This song was played on bass by Patrick Djivas who played with Stratos in the very first years of AREA … nice emotion on this last one!

In short, an excellent sunday evening with PFM which remains one of the last flagship prog group from the '70s.

Grazie Mille Uomini ! (A Thousand Thanks Gentlemen)

I'm surprised Peter Hammills solo work doesn't appear to get more mention on this board. I find VDGG a bit too much hard work but enjoy some of Hammills solo works. Nadirs Big Chance being a favourite.

Your nobodys business and Institute of Mental health (Burning) being things of greatness.

A huge influence on Johhny Rotten.

Hi,

If you like Hammills' solos album, rediscover "A Silent Corner And An Empty Stage", specially the songs "A Louse Is Not A Home" where, I think, Hammill has realize a beautifull "full fusion" of his dark piano with Jackson's saxophone and "dirty drums" from Guy Evans. Special attention on his lyrics: really intense and true !

I remember being very worried a few years ago at a PFM London concert when I heard that he was going to sing "The World Became.. " with them.  I wasn't a fan of his and didn't want my favourite song by them to be spoilt.
Or so I thought , - turned out he acquitted himself very well and pulled it of magnificently.   A pleasent surprise.

I had to eat my words. -   Respect where respect's due.  :-)
