So how long is the right length? Wink

Seriously though, some CDs I think are too long and I get bored. They seem to have fillers and empty spaces and hidden tracks. I want a great journey, not a long one. But am I the only one?

How long do you think a CD album should play for?

I know that some will say it depends on the content of the CD etc but I'm trying to get a rough estimate.

Thanks in advance

I... actually don't care. Sorry man, but my favourite albums vary from 30 minutes to 70, so I can't really say.

As long as it's required to completely express the musical and or conceptual idea the musician tries to share with the audience.

The fact that some long albums have fillers is unimportant, because you can find fillers in long and short albums, that depends on the skills of the composer.

Due to the versatility of the CD format, is less usual to find fillers than in an LP format, because the band had to divide the album in two sides of 18 to 25 minutes, sometimes had 15 minutes and was necessary to add a filler to make the side long enough.

Sometimes a band had material for three sides, so they had to add an infamous fourth side full of fillers to make a double LP, or delete some good material to have a single, today you don't have that problem, if the musician has 75 minutes of music, he can release a CD with that time

An album must be exactly 64 minutes and 13 seconds or I pitch it in the bin.Dead

Despite growing up on CDs, I'm finding that I really prefer LP length. 35-45 minutes seems coolest to me. I don't know. I've never owned a record in my life, yet I think they're about the coolest form of music storage ever.

Is the purpose of this thread to start a groundswell of support among the listening public to have them beseech bands across the world to conform to the results found here?  Who cares?  You have two camps:

A.  The easily bored who are indignant if a band dares to gives you more music for your money, goes over 45 minutes and fills up a CD.

B. Those who are happy with all they can get.

Those should be the two choices.

p.s. plus this thread has been done to death

That's why I like forums so much. LOL Some helpful members like to;

1: paraphrase your question into something you didn't ask because they think they know what you really wanted to ask.

2: point out that you should know, (whether you are new to the forum or not), the contents of every thread so that you can be sure you ask only original questions never before asked of an ever changing audience.

So returning to my specific poll.., I care what the result will be, as I assume do all those who have taken the time to cast a vote.

The result will actually help me make a decision about a project I'm currently working on, because at this time I'm undecided, and because I'm not sure I thought I'd ask.

People with nothing constructive to add should simply move along.

An album should be as long as the good music lasts.

To me, there is no "golden" album length. Be it Mirage or The Human Equation, what matters to me is the music, which can, as can be seen from given examples.

If it's a Sigur Ros album, 22.30 minutes is ok...

For DT, add another 50 to the mix...Tongue

I think 50 minutes is the optimum, but I know some excellent albums which are less than 30 or more than 70 minutes, so it's not a key property on which an album should be judged.

As long as it's great it doesn't matter how long an album is to me Smile.   However having heard a lot of longer modern albums, the older classics just seem so short these days.

Just because an album is a short 35-40 mins doesn't mean it has no filler.  What Ivan said above is very true.

What I really love though is a double cd with about 2 and a half hours of virtually all brilliant music, say for instance, Stardust We Are by The Flower Kings Approve.

35-40 minutes, although an album can last 80 minutes for me if the music is of high quality throughout.

Wacky christmas music here!
