I suggest Scott Walker for Rio/Avant Prog. His music is sooooooooooo weird. It's unconventional in almost every way. Just listen to The Drift or Tilt, it's weird and very avant-garde stuff. Very bizzare and actually quite scary.

I am not knowledgeable of RIO much at all but I would have to say that Scott Walker is so weird it is almost debatebale if it's music as opposed to an extreme art form. Not my cup of tea and IMO not progressive .I understand chaotic themes and dissonance can be a contributing factor but Scott walker seems to take that to another levelStern Smile

I find Walker's 'The Drift' a thrilling and frightening album. It's definitely avant-garde, but I don't know if it's prog.

Judging by the sole track available on his website, he's neither extreme nor rock enough to be on a prog rock site. Though if Peter Hammil can be here, why not Walker.

If that's not Avant-Garde then THERE IS NO Avant-Garde. I can't classify that music as anything other than Avant-Garde. It's not even rock or pop etc, just Avant-Garde. Purely.

Exactly.

I'd be surprised if any serious, forward-looking artists nowadays used this term in reference to their work with any degree of seriousness, it's so meaningless. At best it can function as a commercial tag, equivalent to 'no commercial potential'.

Nice suggestion. Scott Walker's last three releases are definitely very avant-garde, but Im not too familiar with any of them (only a few listens each) so I can't judge how prog they are here and now. Excellent stuff anyways, from what I remember. Very weird!

Absolutely. His non-presence is, in my opinion, one of the TOP 5 omissions of this site. And maybe it's just me, but I can hear BOTH rock and avant garde in his music. Speaking of 'progressive rock'..let's say you can't see trees because the forest is too thickEmoticons.

Great, unique artist with music which is a rewarding experience.
