Topic: Music from The Elder Posted: December 03 2008 at 18:49 |
I read today that the hard rock band Kiss (you know the make up and fire guys) released a prog album called Music From the Elder, anyone here own it, or was it just a mislabeling of a slightly un-kiss album during the days of prog ?

Yes. My wife is a Kiss fan and when I heard the Elder, I was surprised how cool it was. I recommend it highly. It's very medievil and has hints of Rush, Sabbath and Floyd. It's their best album for sure because it isn't hard rock or girly, it's prog

I bought it on LP back when I was a kid. I once heard Paul Stanley say of The Elder that it was a good album, just not a good KISS album.
It was unlike anything they had ever done before or since: a conceptual album with characters and dialogue (towards the end after "I", if memory serves). Pretty good tunes with "The Oath", Ace's "Dark Light" (complete with a dazzling guitar solo), "I" (which a little like "Shout It Out Loud" with Simmons and Stanley trading lead vocals and a monsterous chorus), and the instrumental "Escape From The Island" (I think that was the title).
There were some stinkers with "A World Without Heroes", but I thought it was a decent album. I haven't heard it in years. Like to listen to it again, though. I just remember huddling at my buddy's house for a sleepover to see their live appearance on the late night show Fridays. I think they did "The Oath" and "I".
I also think this was the first album with Eric Carr, who was a dramatic upgrade in drummers over Criss. Unfairly underrated and a true student of the drums. What a tragic loss when he died.
You've got me curious to hear this again. Like I said, it's probably been over 20 years since I've heard it.

I own Music from the elder since 1993, and belive me I never considered a prog album, not even related. If because this album has some keys added over some hard rock chops doesn't mean is prog, and by the way is the worst Kiss album ever.

The first person to suggest Kiss be added to the archives will be hung, drawn, quartered, burned, hanged again, then fed to the dogs until they're really sorry.

I think this was the best post I have ever read. Ever. No one can ever top this post.
| I can only imagine. I suggested Boston (for prog related) and nearly got my balls handed to me in a Dixie cup. You would have thought I suggested T-Pain.

Well, that reminds me a lot of the infamous "offer you can't refuse" ... Seriously, since I've been here I've seen everyone and their dog suggested for addition, so I wouldn't be surprised if someone came up with Kiss. On the other hand, I'm sure not even Micky would dare do anything of the sort. especially after Jim's masterful pronouncement .

Hmm....Boston for prog-related doesn't seem like such an outrageous suggestion. I mean, I can hear some proggy influence in the first album. But I want to keep my balls, so f--- Boston!

This thread made me to take "Music from The Elder" from the shelf and listen to it. Not a bad album at all. Though I'm far from suggesting Kiss to be added on PA.

Boston has two prog related moments. Foreplay/Longtime, the 8-minute song from the debut with extended soloing and instrumental sections and the 4-part, 12-minute Walk On Suite from Walk On. Other than that, they don't have a prog bone in them. But this isn't the Boston discussion, so Ill shut my trap

I'm not famillar enough with Kiss to make a judgement but to me they seem more like Zepplin and Sabbath than Yes or Genesis, but anyone can make one, rogue prog album... I'm tempted to listen to it, but I also don't want to pay for it if its just a kiss album with some keyboards and one track thats longer than five minutes.

Despite Jim's arguments I think that they should be added because of
their progressive nature towards live performances and their influence
on the rock, power rock, power metal and disco scenes in the mid and
late 70s. If not for them we would not have a lot of music. Plus, the
cover for Destroyer is a helluva lot better than Love Beach. Kiss may
never have made a side long epic but a lot of their songs show
progressive tenancies, just listen to the speed change in "Shout It Out
Loud" or the troubadouristic qualities of "Detroit Rock City".
Be more open minded Jim. This is a progressive rock archive, not nazi Germany.

Dammit Mike, you're right - how could I have been so wrong? The scales have dropped from my eyes & I understand now! A true Damascene moment... Forget Genesis, to hell with Gentle Giant... Kiss are the true pioneers of genuine progressive rock!! All hail the god of thunder! 'Babe' is probably the greatest short, under-rated prog rock ballard of all time. Truly - I am humbled

Good boy
As a prog metal expert, I recommend Kiss' addition. Don't ask me why. Just believe me.

As a baseball hater, I ask for tolerance for all sports. And, as a prog metal expert, I demand Kiss addition. Arguments? Many.

Live is just a facade for their real musical experiments. Prog is their second name and they have to be here. One reason: because I, a prog metal expert, demand it. However... we see hope... Not to be recommended for inclusion here. The world is an unfair place when Magma can be here and not Kiss. They have a brand, we have standards. Standards which suffer when we don't add the BRAND ()...usually... Not.. alwaysBut no! Yes! No! Yes!!NO!YES! ADD KISS! I TELL YOU! THEY ARE PROG! A FAIRY TOLD ME IN MY SLEEP! ADD THEM!!!!!!
