Phish's first few albums are great, but... most people you put against Zappa will lose.

You've got to be kidding..

Not that Phish was bad, but Zappa was far better.

Phish is in my top 5 favorite bands of all time easily, but Zappa's repitioire is huge and highly inventive. Phish wouldnt be Phish  (at least in their earlier years) without Zappa's music. so i think Frank wins

To be honest it's a far more valid comparison than some I've seen - albums by Phish/Zappa (especially live albums) both feature extended instrumental sections by outstanding musicians led by exceptional lead guitarists, these extended sections can go in any way you could imagine (and sometimes ways you couldn't) and the 'bands' concerned have to be ready for the guitarist to take the music any way he decides.

Personally, I think it's a great comparison

But hey - it's gotta be Frank!

I'm in the super-minority on this one.  I have all of the Phish studio albums and many of their live releases.  I have 2 Frank Zappa albums.  So at least at this point in time, my preference is Phish.

They've both got amazing studio and live stuff, both are up there as all time favorite artists. However Zappa's just legendary. He's got a substantial margin on quality studio albums and nothing quite compares to live Zappa, even Phish. He always had a way to manipulate his bands to play to their fullest potential, while at the same time making sure no two shows were alike. I often wish I could go back in time and see him, though unfortunately he was before my time Cry.

Well at least Phish are coming back soon!

I am surprised that anyone went with Phish on this.

Really?

I'll bet they don't play the UK though!

No disrespect to Phish, but Zappa's way ahead on this one.
