OK, but the ipod is a great product: easy to use, easy to handle, with an good interface and nice playing system. I have mine for over a year and it never let me down.

I'm not saying that it's a bad product. I just think it's overpriced, and it doesn't support formats other than it's own proprietary AAC and MP3 (I guess there are ways around that, but AFAIK they're "hacks"). It's a bit different today, but when the iPod came out these limitations were a clever move to fight other download portals ... most of the others used Microsoft's DRM, which is also proprietary but at least wasn't bound to any particular hardware as much as Apple's was.

Anyways ... I'm glad that I've been using Creative hardware for many years now, because they're compatible with Napster. I wouldn't trade that flatrate for anything!

Well, here we don't have the Creative player (unfortunately) and both the ipod and the microsoft player have the exact same price. So, since i knew the wonderful microsoft interface and lack of problems, i bought an ipod, becuse it seems the best choice out of those 2 players. Besides, i also have a "cheap" 2GB generic mp4 player.

^ well, since there is no Napster in Brasil ... it probably doesn't make much of a difference. Smile

Opeth ? Really ? #1 ?

They're about as Progressive as my big toenail... which is in-grown.

Hail -Radioswim- and his in-grown toenail!

Over land and under ashes
In the sunlight, see - it flashes
Find a fly and eat his eye
But don't believe in me
Don't believe in me
Don't believe in me

True.
Opeth and Volta got huge bumps for being well known it seems, but overall I'd say that I'm rather satisfied with the list.

I think they got huge bumps for being AWESOME!

I'm very late to seeing this list. I don't know how I missed it. Anyway, it's somewhat of a good list.

your absolutely right, it is gross. And it also hurts, which is what I was implying about Opeth's Music.
I don't know, I just never understood them I guess. In my opinion the #1 spot should go to a more progressive and deserving artist, such as Steve Wilson, or Marillion. I guess I speak for myself and a small group of others though, sadly.

your right, it's a GREAT list. I don't think Volta made it up there because they're awesome. They made it because they are a truly talented and creative group.

I think watershed truly belongs at number one. Its a pretty good album, and I dont even like metal. Anyway, overall, it looks like 2008 was a pretty bad year for prog. What happened!

im glad opeth made a top ten appearance however i'm not sure watershed was deserving of number one, it seemed a little uninspired compared to their early stuff to my ears at least... il bacio della medusa was well deserving of a high spot as was mars volta. thought insurgentes would have been a little higher... but i guess the album isn't released as a hard copy until march 2009 so that might have something to do with it i guess

Do you ever want to go back and redo a top of the year list later?  Seriously, I find albums all the time that weren't hyped that much that I discovery some years later... either buying a back catalog or word of mouth and I think, "this album is one of the best albums released that year" yet it never made it to anyone's list.  Weird how that works out.

And yeah... some of the list is totally amazing music, but isn't what I'd call prog.  And yeah... it is missing Ghost Circus - Across the Line which is easily in the top 5 prog albums of 2008. IMO.

2008 was just a crappy year for music in general.

I didn't know what that was, so I looked it up, and this is what I found:

Yeah, not buying it.

And anyway, one album can't make a year good by itself.

Opeth? Not Progressive? You clearly haven't listened to Watershed, because you can't possibly listen to it and say it is not prog.

I agree that calling OPETH progressive is a bit of a stretch... I own 5 of their albums now, and they still feel like pure death metal to me...
