Great fusion band! A lot darker than FK, i am sure a lot of people on this forum have heard of this band.

I'm giving a first-time listen to Tomas Bodin's solo debut, An Ordinary Night in My Ordinary Life. I can't say it's thrilling me all that much.

I got the new Transatlantic in the mail today, but I'm still waiting on the Flower Kings' albums I bought overseas via Inside Out's web store. I'm chomping at the bit to listen to The Whirlwind, but I don't want to start something that I can put the time into right now. I also have two more Tangent recordings to listen to and Not As Good As The Book arrived today. Really looking forward to digging into these.

I'm not imagining hearing Daniel Gildenlöw in Unfold the Future right?

Tangent really doesn't do anything for me.  it's listenable, but is more space rock to my ears.  not just drones, but more of a flow rather than specific parts of songs a la TFK.

incidentally, in my futile attempts to collect and (by god) enjoy all things related to TA i got my second SB album...Beware of Darkness.  i really liked The Light (except for The Water).  However, BoD is doing absolutely nothing for me.  The Doorway is okay.  ironic thing about him is that he's singing thinly veiled Christian lyrics and doesn't really know it.  i don't know, it's just kind of cheesy to me.  i don't think i'm going to get another album by them.  i've enjoyed Morse's solo stuff more consistently.  he really seemed to come into his own as a solo artist and in TA.  maybe Portnoy has something to do with it:)  so, is SB post-morse any good.  i heard Feel Euphoria before, but nothing really jumped out at me.  very alt. rock sounding...with synth, of course.

fwiw-listened to Driver's Seat 2 times in a row last night.  That opening riff just kills me every time and i'm really getting into Daniel!  maybe PoS will be my next project.

^ In my opinion, the follow up to Beware of Darkness, "The Kindness of Strangers" is their best, followed by "V" which is also amazing, and maybe the band's best as well, at least, it's their most popular album.

I only have "X" as far as post-Neal albums go. It's good, but I haven't felt the itch to listen to it often since I got it.

The Tangent are more jazzy than TFK, but for sure, they take some time to appreciate. Give them a break and come back later. You might like them then.

Driver's Seat is great, I love Adam & Eve.

PoS are a completely different thing as far as TFK related bands go. They're barely related, other than the fact that Daniel was in TFK for a short time. PoS is more prog metal, and not my thing really. I tried the recent Road Salt albums as well, as they're not metal, but they were very pedestrian albums to me.

I'm still getting familiar with The Tangent right now, but comparing them with TFK is like apples and oranges IMHO. I like some parts of Comm but I know I'll need to listen to it again to fully digest what I just heard. I did listen to the new Transatlantic last night and was quite disappointed to be honest. There just wasn't any particular melody or theme that stuck out to me. It just sounded like one giant wash. There were some good parts, but it's not as good as their first album, which remains my favorite.

Spock's Beard is pretty good, but The Kindness of Strangers, V, and Snow are my favorites. I didn't care much for their other albums and I completely lost interest in the band when Morse left. For me, it just wasn't the same. I heard a few songs from their newer album X but I wasn't impressed.

Having finally got home broadband after three weeks of waiting at our new home, I downloaded Banks of Eden last night, and have it on for the first listen now.

Mightily impressive, thus farBig smile

Shocked

"The Doorway is OK"? Shocked

This is amazing for me because 'Beware of Darkness' was an absolute revelation to me when I first heard tracks off the album back in about 1998.

By the mid-80s I'd practically given up on anything matching the prog rock of the early 70s but when I heard "Walking On The Wind" and the title track from "Beware of Darkness" on a radio rock show in the UK, I knew I was hearing the best prog rock since 1977 and the whole album just blew me away when I bought it. Spock's Beard were my second prog awakening and this album has a very special place in my heart because they opened the door(way) to all these other amazing bands that we all love. Plus, with Neal Morse, they were one of the best live bands I have ever seen. When he left The Beard it was my single most disappointing and upsetting event in all my years of loving rock music.

I'm just saying Wink

Maybe you had to be there at the time...........

Smile

Sorry, I'm with the other guy.  I quite liked The Light when I first got it. The two epics, specifically, even though they seemed rather schizophrenic.  Never liked "Go The Way You Go".  Too pop-oriented (vocally, at least).  To be, BoD was just an album where every song was like GTWYG.  Probably not really true, looking at the track listing (I haven't listened to it in ages), but that was my impression at the time.  Like "The Doorway" pretty well, and maybe "Time Has Come", but as I said I haven't heard it in a while, so I can't say for sure.

The only reason I got my final SB album, Day for Night was because I was going to see them open for Dream Theater and figured I should be "up" on the latest SB, since I already had the first two.  But no more.  That one was even more pop oriented than BoD!

I'm kind of interested in hearing SB with Ted Leonard, but I don't think I'll buy it without at least hearing it first!

well, the cheese factor went way down when neal left.  it really was no surprise to be that he became a christian...his music has sounded contemporary christian from the beginning.  he's also very influenced by musical theater.  not bad, just not my cup of tea.  that being said, aside from the piano intro The Light is as good as any symph prog mini epic past or present.  maybe BoD will grow on me.  not sure.  i listened to V on youtube and that wasn't doing much for me either.  so, we'll see.  there's something about them, (the music?) that's keeps me coming back to check them out though.

their bass player is a badass as is alan morse.Approve

Honestly, I find Neal's solo prog albums more fun to listen to than Spock's, although I've grown to enjoy the Neal era quite a bit. I couldn't get into Snow, and haven't heard Day For Night yet, but the other 4 Neal-era albums are fantastic IMO.
I think Portnoy brings that punch that Neal's music needs (not that Nick didn't do a good job himself). All of Neal's prog solo albums are all excellent, some being true modern prog classics (Sola Scriptura, ?, Testimony 2, and One).

The Flower Kings are still better. Wink

I'm listening to Banks Of Eden, after exactly one month since the last time I listened to it (according to my last.fm), and it sounds just as fresh and exciting. I dare say I'm enjoying it even more now, since I'm more familiar with the music.

How has BoE been holding up for you guys? How would you rank your favorite songs from it?

I'm just going to rank the main disc. I don't feel I've listened to the bonus disc enough.

Numbers
For The Love of Gold
For Those About To Drown
Rising The Imperial
Pandemonium

To be honest, I consider Snow a 3/3.5 stars album, not for sure in my top 3. Too pop-inspired and less progressive than other Neal's works, like ? or T2. I know is quite appreciated round here, but I prefer a lot The Light and Beware Of Darkness..
