Baris Manco is indeed "the" king of Turkish music, prog or not. He played progressive music in the '70's, the heyday of prog, and well into the mid-'80's, because in Turkey we used to follow the European & North American musical scenes some five years behind (which is good, because when the rest of the world, especially so-called symphonic prog bands in Europe, produced sh*t, we still had good music here; and luckily punk almost never found its way down here, at least in the popular sense...)
Baris Manco produced two magnificent albums in 1981 and 1983 (apart from his groundbreaking stuff made in '70's, of course), when prog veterans such as Genesis, Yes, ELP etc. simply sucked... (King Crimson is a notable exception, they are always "The King" ). His 1985 album "24 Ayar Manço" (meaning: "24 Carat Manco"... ring any bells ?) is still good, although much influenced by the synth-pop movement which had been taking the world by storm by then... I have already written a comprehensive musical biography of him, based on his released recordings (i.e. singles & L.P's), including short reviews of each. Unfortunately that is in Turkish, and I suspect anyone besides me or Dervisan would be able to understand . I hope I'll be able to translate it in chunks, and post here as appropriate. Baris Manco is one of the 4 names who should definitely be featured in progarchives, along with Erkin Koray, Cem Karaca and Mogollar (btw, he collaborated with Mogollar for a brief time, the penultimate song in the samples above, "Binboganin Kizi" is from that period). I'll be happy if we'll be able to introduce this tasty music from Turkey to you fellows in progarchives. |

Listen to Turkish psych/prog; you won't regret:
Baris Manco,Erkin Koray,Cem Karaca,Mogollar,3 Hürel,Selda,Edip Akbayram,Fikret Kizilok,Ersen (and Dadaslar) (but stick with the '70's, and 'early 80's!) |
