I've tried listening to some of their music, but to me they just sound like heavy/glam metal (a genre I generally don't care for) with a couple odd times thrown in. Any songs I should sample or albums I should check the songs off in particular? I looked at a couple songs off of Parallels and The Spectre Within and those would be the songs I wasn't particularly impressed with.

I consider FATES WARNING are the best Prog Metal ever. Dream Theater are lost for me since years.
I need a new TOOL work soon, please!!

Overall, I am not a huge prog metal fan. I love prog music and metal music, but not very big on both being combined. There are a few exceptions to this (I dig some of Queensryche's work and most of Dream Theater's albums), and Fates Warning are the prog metal band that comes out on top.
I'd consider myself an Alder man over Arch. In fact, Alder is probably my favorite melodic singer in all of metal. To Arch's credit, I like what I've heard on his A Twist of Fate album. Guardian has it's moments (and heard bits of their first 2 albums that didn't grab me), but they were doing what plenty of metal bands were doing at the time in terms of their sound and image. Starting with Perfect Symmetry is where FW really began to hit their own sound. Hard to choose a favorite album, but I'll go with the one which I'm certain to give a 5 star review of one day (A Pleasant Shade of Grey). |

I am currently in the process of collecting their back catalogue. I currently have four Alder albums and one Arch album (Awaken The Guardian). I like Awaken... very much but I do prefer the Alder albums. I actually thouroughly like FWX. The track 'Heal Me' is, I think, a superb song of great power and rhythm. I took great pleasure in blasting it out to my former housemates! (That's not why they're former housemates by the way!) I own John Arch's Twist Of Fate EP which is brilliant and I also own OSI's first two albums which I enjoy especially the first one.

Iīm not very fond of their earlier albums ( pre- Perfect Symmetry) but Awaken the Guardian is a pretty good album. No Exit never made my blood boil. Especially because of the weak drumming and annoying drum sound. The first two are just too old school eighties heavy metal for my taste ( bad sound quality and imature songwriting).

There was a time I thought I was over this band
that time has passed since I relistened to APSOG, FWX, and Parallels I can tell there's some great music on Perfect Symmetry but something about the guitar tones really bother me on it as far as their older school sound, No Exit is my favorite |

I have only heard two albums from them, the first two BTW, but there's a great thing about them, they are really the soul of prog metal... they are very underrated, great band indeed... I like a lot more Dream Theater, because it's much more than metal with complex arrangements, but both bands are great... John Arch voice is great, especially in his only solo album... a most have if you like them in Arch Era... which album do you suggest from them to me...???
Besides, the guys from FW played in the First Chroma Key album... great vibe and performance, which shows that they can play with meaning and not only with skills...

I saw them opening for Dream Theater on the Awake tour ( Fates Warningīs latest at the time was Inside Out) and they blew Dream Theater away IMO. Ray Alder isnīt the most active frontman in the world. Actually he stands still most of the time. But god damn his singing was so emotional and he didnīt miss a note. Iīm so happy I got to see them while they still had two guitarists ( yes I know that had guns for hire later on but it was never the same again) and while they concentrated on their three ( IMO) best albums: Perfect Symmetry, Parallels and Inside Out. One of the best concerts Iīve ever been to. Unfortunately I havenīt seen them since. Iīm actually not sure they been to Denmark since then?

I almost agree 100%. One of my fav bands of all times, watched them live during the APSOG era and was blown away (and trust me, Macedonia blew them away as well!!! toolis must know this...) Parallels, A perfect symmetry and most of all APSOG are all great releases, phenomenal in prog metal. I was a bit dissapointed with Disconnected but extremely dissapointed with X (I only like the opening song, the rest are just ok). I am waiting for a great comeback And let's not forget they are not without reason in the BIG THREE of prog-metal (along with DT and Queensryche) I don't like OSI that much I have to say, some boring repetitive compositions in thei albums just make me lose interest... |

Fates Warning, probably my favorite prog metal band, have all albums but prefer ( Ray Alder) No Exit onward, and . Really enjoyed the great use of having two guitarists, the drumming of Mark Zonder, and the minimal use of keys. Lyrically, I preffered them as well. Definitely a band that inspired and influenced me and many bands out there. Also gained my respect when during the "Inside Out" album the first video I saw released was for "Monument", unlike certain other prog metal bands putting out their most accessible material at the time, they put out pretty much the most prog song on the album and stayed true to themselves and their fans. Just my opinion.

My faves are "Spectre Within", "Awaken the Guardian", "Perfect Symmetry", "Parallels", "Inside Out", and " A Pleasant Shade of Gray" - and I think it's great that they all sounds so different from one another. And, man, what a great drummer Mark Zonder is!!! I can only imagine how "No Exit" would have sounded with him behind the drums.
I think the X album is not a bad album, but doesn't really appeal to me. Although it's not an FW album, I really like John Arch's EP "A Twist of Fate", too. I wish he'd make a couple of more albums. |

Well, I'm just too sophisticated to like the same music as the rest of you. |

worship them... the Arch era is ok although too Maidenish... Mark Zonder, after Warlord disbanded, took some jazz courses and became the 'monster' he is now and thanks to him Jim Matheos managed to create those monumental albums like Perfec Symmetry and A Pleasant... Ray Alder, along with Geoff Tate (Queensryche) are my fave prog metal singers.. very emotional and powerful... Matheos is probably the best lyricist out there, IMHO... didn't like X album, though... i've watched live twice, one for Live In Athens DVD, and they were excellent... what else can i say? one of the best prog band of the 90's.... |

I think they're possibly the most hit-and-miss band in all of prog. They have some great, great songs, but every album of theirs I've heard is 50% filler with the sole exception being The Spectre Within which truly deserves its status as a classic.

Love his drumming too. His playing on Perfect Symmetry was considered very innovative at the time even though he is so clearly influenced by Neil Peart ( but who isnīt?).
