Well, without Topographic Oceans and The Wall being on the list, it makes it a little easier for me. But not much.
Gryphon doesn't tug at my heartstrings enough. Sinatra was in the mix but since he's not on the site I'll let that slide. Same with Joni, sadly not here despite her glorious jazz years with Jaco and Methany. Jacula is tempting but too new to my fave list to be on top, same with Bededeum and BDM. Prince was pretty weak and Jesse V, apart from irritating religious conservatives in our legislature which I will always love him for, never cut a great prog album. Cervello is great but again hasn't pierced my heart as much as my three finalists from this list, which would be Kate, Syd, and QVL. Choosing from those 3 is akin to eating my lima beans, water torture, or going without coffee in the morning. QVL the romantic beauty full of piano and violin, with that great album cover. Kate, whose live performance on the Tour of Life video actually makes me cry in at least 3 places (good tears). And Syd. The single most underappreciated and misunderstood artist on the site. Taste differences are one thing and I accept that....but not recognizing the importance of Piper to rock music is unforgivable ignorance in my book. And I see it all the time around the Web, sometimes even perpetuated by his former bandmates. I really can't choose firmly between Kate and Syd, but the vote goes to Piper as a nod of respect to broken ground in mid 1967.....hitting space running well before any crimson kings.....he may not be prog by many people's definitions (conveniently written off as "psych" only) but he was progressive to me. In a big way. As Smith writes in his prog book....."Piper is the earliest album length example of modern progressive music....it did not accept the pop forms of the era as it found them, choosing instead to create playful, surreal stereo soundscapes....the album is critical to understanding the radical breaks from popular styles that progressive music introduced." My thanks to Thomas and John Davie for their continued proggy inspirations. John (Sinkadotentree) was the absolute first collab at this site to reach out with kindness and encouragement when I first came here, overlooking my ignorance on certain topics, helping me become a better reviewer, and sharing our collective laments of lost youth. He is non-judgemental, open-minded, and a great ambassador for the site. Edited by Finnforest - February 28 2009 at 10:18 |

I went with Kick Inside. I'm not completely familiar with it yet so currently I kinda enjoy Piper more, but now I felt more like picking Kate. I've gotta listen to Gryphon more, it seems like good stuff. Il tempo della gioia would be a lot better without the falsetto parts that sound just like me trying to reach higher than I ought to.

Raff, I am in the wine and restaurant business and yes Barolo (needing to be decanted at least an hour before serving ) is not what I or you want to drink with antipasto, but I wanted to provide some heartache to Signore Russelli who ambushed both sinkadotentree and I and only indegestion would befit him as a suitable torture! As my post title said Revenge is a dish better eaten cold, but knowing Jim , he would probably be sipping some Rose de Provence or champagne! classy fellow !

John, that little family restaurant was a real place, in my family's traditions for 7 decades....and it burned down last night my friend....i sh*t you not. i teared up a bit watching the grandsons of the man who opened in '33. they're going to try to re-open, but at this point i don't know. i saw the video and it didn't look good.

IL BACCIO DELLA MEDUSA .
I consider Jim(Finnforest) a good friend who knows way too much about the Italian-Prog genre and PINK FLOYD. I've benefited from this knowledge many time so i'm not complaining. Talking with Jim about music and growing up has always been special to me. And his reviews make me envious.I don't know how many times i've thought "I wish i said that". One of my favourites from Mr.Russelli is when he compared the lesser know Italian bands to the "Big 3". And i quote "...i'll take the blue collar Italian restaurant in the rough part of town with it's checkered table cloth,80 year-old family sauce recipe, and slight spilled beer smell over the black tie Italian cafe downtown with the trained superstar chef who has been on cooking shows". Yeah that's Jim.And try getting a 5 star rating from him.

Thomas, would you seriously drink Barolo with antipasto? I've always drunk it (though I can't say I particularly like it) with robust stuff such as roast lamb... Anyway, I voted for the Floyd, with Kate a close second. |

I opine that the "darker" side of finnforest would really be about Kate Bush , who has declined his marriage proposals allegedly and for whom our man has strong and wet desires ! I am sure he would love to share some fine Brunello di Montalcino, a nice Saltimbocca a la Romana and a lovely Grappa finale while listening to BDM, whispering (how apropos!) sweet Italian nothings in her ear! Hey, Jim , do ya have blue eyes by any chance, it may help!

RQtG3 is the best album up there, in my opinion. Shear genious instrumental work by Gryphon.

Poll title from sinkadotentree, we did a little collab side work in order to get back at finnforest! Nice vote for Mitchell, this will really get the ball rolling! Perhaps even a Sinatra vote! That would be something!
