Topic: Samla Mammas Manna Posted: April 28 2005 at 19:19 |
anyone have an opinion of this Swedish band? making GREAT progressive fusion back in the early 70's! on the early release dates of 73, 74 and 75, they kinda make Anglagard sound like AnglaGOON, Flower Kings sound like the Flower Queens and easily compete with King Crimson or any other english fusion, probably better and more fun than any of the above mentioned. dont forget Silence Records in the early 70s, Bo Hansson, Algarnas Tradgard, Samla Mammas Manna and Ragnarok! Smoke that in your peace pipe! the swedes early 70s and danes later were truly great!

I have reviewed a few of their albums, from Samla to Von Zamla. Still like Maltid best!

Their drummer and brainchild are currently with the Flower Queens.

Their musicianship is excellent, and so is their ability to interplay creatively: since they lie on jazzy-fusion-almost RIO realsm, I would set them closer to the stuff made by Zappa, Supersister, Henry Cow.
Classic recordings? IMHO, yes. I mean, GG didn't "need" to be as famous as Yes or Genesis to become classics among true prog fans. Why should SMM be? And boy, the ywere: for their first 5 years they had a big cult following in their own country.

SMM's Matlid Klossa Knapitatet Snorungarnas Symfoni are all top notch recordings for the openminded you wont have to worry about a language barrier as this is more of a rock n roll circus.

I don't think is very coherent and convenient to compare SMM or ZMM to
any of those bands you listed above. It is like saying Hatfield and The
North makes Tool look like "Fool". Ok, there's the direct relation
between SMM and Anglagard due to their homeland conection. But if you
have heard some of the stuff by anglagard you could notice, imo, a
great amount of originality. One of the most creative bands from the
90s, imo. Too bad they broke up so early. They are both great bands,
Anglagard and SMM. But you should try making your point without the
need of that kind of silly comparissons. That took strength away from
your post.

Have you heard Hasse B's new project, Flying Food Circus? It's basically Samla Mammas Manna under a new name.

I had the pleasure to hear them as the opening act to "Flower Kings" last year. Great gig! Hasse B was busy that night though
