Stackridge were generally not into epics but these three tracks are definitely in that category. 
 
God Speed the Plough is a stunningly beutiful instrumental that evokes the view over an English valley in the twilight of early dawn in mid June.
 
Purple Spaceships Over Yatton, apart from beoing one of the best names for a track, is a piece of instrumental genius that makes the journey from sane to insane and back again.  Strangely it was not released on an album.
 
Syracuse the Elephant is by far the best progressive rock song about a zoo elephant.  It has some classic instumentation and contains the immortal lines;
 
Born and bred in Bristol zoo, brought up on swedes
His keeper was a specialist who came down from Leeds
 

 
i find it hard to chose between these three but God Speed the Plough gets my vote.

Stackridge are tattooed on my heart, good fellow!
 
I'll vote for the mighty Purple Spaceships Over Yatton, a cosmic instrumental epic par excellence if ever there was one.
 
There was a groovy new version released in 2007 as the title track of the Best Of... album too.
 
I'll be seeing them live again at the Rydal Arms in New Milton, Hampshire on 4th April - my 56th Stackridge gig.
 
Thrash On, Brothers of the Rhubarb....

Well, i'm glad there is at least one other person of fine taste on this forum.

Sorry, TYA. I'd not noticed this before.

I love the dustbin banging,rhubarb thashing Stackridge.

'Syracuse the Elephant'.

Some lovely mellotron on that.

I'd also like to throw in a couple in mini-epics from Mr Mick.
They are 'Fish in a Glass' and the 'tron-fest that is 'Coniston Water'.

Would you describe 'No One's More Important Than The Earthworm' and 'Slark' as an epics?

Yes.  I listed my 3 favourites. 

Earthworm would ideally have been a minute longer.  Although God Speed the Plough is also only about 5 minutes it is most definitely an epic.
 
Slark is also a grand epic but i've never thought it among Stackridge's best - the melodic theme is a bit obvious and rather laboured IMO.  Having said that, Mutter really brought it to life (if thats the right word) on stage.
 
Would the inclusion of either of these have changed your vote?

It would have made my vote more difficult had 'Earthworm' been included.

But as you say, the length is just a tad short for epic proportions.The structure of the song definately has an epic feel to it especially on the longer BBC live on air version.

Do 'The Stanley' otherwise I'll thrash you with some rhubarb.

I consider Mr. Mick one of the finest albums I own ... you can still put it on the table and listen to it ... and not get bored.
 
Actually even the offshoot of this band was very good ... The Korgis ...

Hi lads ? just joined this forum, Tull and the Ridge are my favourite bands, saw Mutter and the rest of the band at Milton Keynes in February, gawd they're fast approaching sixty but they can still do it, I'm digressing, can't argue with any of your choices and would like to add another from last years newie 'A victory for common sense' , the final track on the album is just over eleven minutes, it's called 'The day the world stopped turning', try it, awesome track from an awesome album.
