Jupiter and the infinite beyond.
For sometime I've wanted to get into astrophotography, I have two cheap reflector telescopes that take standard size eyepieces so it should be easy to fit a T-mount adapter to my DLSR to attach it to one of the telescopes. Or so I thought. Unfortunately the Olympus OM-D is a micro four-thirds camera so even though I have a T-mount adapter that mounts the camera perfectly I cannot get it to focus. Frustrated at not being able to use the camera with a telescope I set it up on a tripod and linked it to my iPad using the Olympus wifi link. And there lies the first problem - the camera's autofocus cannot focus on the night-sky so it has to be set to Manual, which introduces the second problem, the lens does not have a distance markings on its manual focus ring, which brings up the final problem in that the camera has an electronic viewfinder rather than an optical one so you cannot focus on the stars manually either. Trial and error ensues... take an image, adjust the focus slightly, take another , etc., etc. The night-sky is not always receptive to people taking its photograph, more often than not clouds cover the stars or the moon is so bright that only the brightest stars can be seen. This first picture is a shot from the top of the garden looking back towards the house: (a 30 second exposure - the bright-object centre field is Jupiter) The second is a cropped image of the moon: (1/2000th of a second, 150mm lens) This next one is actually pretty poor due to the long exposure time, but it's the best I could manage in trying to capture the crescent moon with its night side illuminated by earthshine: (10 second exposure, 150mm lens) Looking for meteors (not finding them), too much cloud cover but nice image of Ursa Major thou' (14 second exposure, 14mm lens) First night of trying to see Comet Lovejoy (looking in the wrong place ) however, a good shot of Orion: (20 seconds with 14mm lens) Finding Lovejoy, it's the bright green dot on the right-hand edge of the picture, the blue cluster of stars are The Pleiades: (15 seconds, 40mm lens ISO6400) And finally, a picture taken last night of the Galilean moons of Jupiter: Io, Europa, Ganymede and Callisto (1 second, 150mm lens) Even though I say so myself, the last image is remarkable considering it is taken with a simple set-up of a DLSR and a standard 40-150mm zoom lens, it probably could be focussed a lot better but that is one of the pitfalls of the camera. I'm currently searching eBay for a cheap Canon EOS to use solely for astrophotography, hopefully that will fit one of my telescopes.

Atmospheres by György Ligeti would have been apt.
