I have just been spending some time listening to some of my favorite Manson albums, and was wondering what the community here thinks of him. Feel free to express any feelings you have.

I quite like him for his music, and the conceptual nature of it. Especially Holy Wood, Mechanical Animals, and Antichrist Superstar. Dark and gothic, conceptual and brooding. these are things I love in music.

I try to separate the music from the image, and take the lyrics in an almost Rock Opera mindset.

I agree, sadly. I absolutely adore The concept trilogy, but don't care for anything else.

Probably one of my least favorite (I use this term loosely) artists of all time. Never saw the big deal.

I used to be a fan when I was in high school, course the novelty wore off for me. Can't stand him anymore. Though I still do own Holy Wood. Wink

Lyrically, he is stagnating. When his nonconformist and violent lyrics aren't conceptual, it falls flat and feels like no more than a shtick. I also feel he lost his musically glammy edge in favor of a bland industrial metal. Trying too hard to fit into the mold he created for himself with his peak albums.

Possibly my favorite of all of them.

He's one guy I never got around to.  Can anyone recommend an album to start with?

If you're ever going to like an album by him then I've always found Mechanical Animals is a good one to start with. It's a little more poppy than the rest, but still manson at the top of his game.

The concept trilogy. Holy Wood is the darkest, Mechanical animals is the brightest (still dark), and most glam inspired. And Antichrist Superstar is A fine meld of the two. That is the order I'd recommend them in, and the order the story supposed to be told in. But in all, those three albums are his lyrical and musical peak.

You mean, you should buy them in the reverse order of how they were released chronologically?

For someone who´s music I´m not particulary excited about I do respect him and I always think it´s funny when people take him too serious

Music isn't bad. Well, his old stuff.

Can't say I am a fan though. Havn't listened him in like a year.

I don't take him seriously. Well, I feel that he is serious about what he does, but I take his message like I take the message of anyone else in music. As a detached belief. As beliefs of character sin stories, stories written bo someone. I suppose complex syntax is in order.

Manson(p) = Manson as a person; Manson (b) = Manson's beliefs; Manson (t) = Manson's existence (read: how he is seen as a complete individual being)

P + B = T

Now, say he writes a rock opera. with characters who believe or feel certain things. Take Adam Kadman for example(The main character of Holy Wood).

Adam Kadman (C) =  Adam Kadman as a character in the story. Adam Kadman (I) = Adam Kadman's beliefs and Adam KAdman (Q) = Adam's existence.

C + I = Q

P + B does not = Q

Nor does C + I directly = T (this might be arguable, but only ol' manson knows) As such, a writer is able to make a character with beliefs that differ from the writer. This leads me to be able to not only take the writers work separately from the writer, but also as a character in a story. What is more interesting? A song saying god isn't real, or a character in a song saying God isn't real?

Yeah, I was really bored and wanted to mess around.

Stonebeard! All you still around old bud? I've been wondering if any of my pals were still here.

And as for Manson...he surely takes what he does seriously. But I think his message/appeal/what have you (just everything about him) is geared for the 15 year old, cynical, high schooler...
