We now have Umphrey McGee's double album "Jimmy Stewart 2007" available in FULL (25 tracks!) on Progarchives Stream Player.
Thanks to Jon McLennand of Grass Roots Marketing, Umphrey's McGee and courtesy of SCI Fidelity. If you listen to the album why not review it. No-one has reviewed it yet!! http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=21368 Mucho kudos to the first written review. |

I have it, and will review it....but it has 25 tracks and it takes a little to give it a fair listen!!!
It mainly seems like a good representative of the "good stuff" from their huge volume of online live tracks. For fans, it's a nice treat to be sure. I think it has a little more power after you've been to a live show.
You have to love this band just for the fresh approach they have to the business and promotions. And if you like them and true jazz / rock fusion....their collaboration with Ohm is out this week! It's up for demand on last.fm.
That work has some great stuff, but it is just the "best of" about 2-3 days of raw jamming. Very little composed work, but talk about all star players...wow. Anyway, thanks to the band!

You are quite a fine person, and I am very fond of you. But you are only quite a little fellow, in a wide world, after all.

The album will not remain there indefinitely so would-be reviewers should act swiftly.

after a bit of consultation with the management, I think it's going to stay up there indefinitely...
the album is most ideal in a seamless environment, in order to listen to each disc as one continuous flow of music through the transitions... though I do feel that most/all of them can stand alone as pieces of music. this is an album of (predominantly melodic) improvisations. Song titles refer only to the springboard for the musical journey... *******from the liner notes******** Jimmy Stewart 2007 is a collection of the year's best improvisational forays sequenced for optimal consumption. As Umphrey's McGee's sound evolves, each live performance is increasingly a showcase for their "Jimmy Stewart" approach of structured improvisation. At over 100 shows a year, the band delves into these spontaneous compositions, engaging their fans as they feed off each other's energy. The process begins at times with a riff crafted from a personal demo; other occasions as a scribbled chord progression on the back of a paper plate, though most often these foundations germinate on the spot. From humble melodic beginnings, each segment develops measure by measure, layer by layer as all six members lock into a cohesive structure. Often times, this newly minted section may yield -- in anticipation of its return -- to the creation of a companion section. A Zappa-inspired language of body gestures and hand-signals allow the band to break structure while creating an entirely new section in tandem. Their focus on melodic development and group interplay allows for each section to develop organically until the multi-part extemporaneous composition has matured into a new piece of music. This composition intensive mentality allows these experimentations to be re-visited in future performances and in their songwriting. Songs such as Bridgeless, Ocean Billy and Intentions Clear are among those that developed from these improvisations. Originally, "Jimmy Stewart" stood apart fom the songs in a manner that was formulated into the setlists. Now they have become a fluid part of every performance, allowing any song to be a source of creation, as their fans anticipate the next journey. Edited by McL2016 - May 18 2009 at 14:02 |

Thanks Jon.
A full album by an established modern Prog band is an honour indeed for the site and its members. I hope as many people as possible will give it a listen. |

You might now want to do this. There's a severe danger of getting hooked. |
