French band Vox Nostra has been generous enough to allow their whole debut album to be streamable from Progarchives - so if anyone wants to take a listen, or perhaps even write a review - go here to start listening :-)

Sounds like a mass in Latin performed by a rock band. Like Magma, they seem to despise french to impress the world with their mastery of a language that they are practically the only ones to understand...

I listened to about half the album, before I had to put away the computer to do other things. Very well sung and played, but I wouldn't say it's my cup of tea.

As regards Latin, it may be a dead language, but it's not extinct. It's the official language of the Catholic Church for one, and I personally know people who can speak it quite fluently. It may not be question of millions of people, but certainly many more than those who speak Kobaian. Ah, and I seem to remember that French descends directly from Latin - so, it is quite a different matter from those bands who 'despise' their native language in order to adopt English.

But you have to admit that it's not  a very common language in rock...This band seems to draw their "lyrics" in catholic liturgy. There is nothing wrong with this but I am not that keen on a mix of sacred chants and rock. Sacred music blended with classical instrumentation works, Gorecki's Miserere, Mozart's Requiem, Pergolese's Stabat Mater, Haydn's Creation are only a handful of classical works that stand out for their majesty and beauty. On the contrary, the "fake" band that blended liturgy with modern music : Era, is truly an abomination.

I am a Catholic myself, I know some of the chants sung during the sunday mass are in latin but I can assure you that none of the churchgoers can speak Latin or understand Latin besides the chants they are used to sing. The prog community is expanding these last years, and Magma grasps mandatorily the attention of the neophyes. Therefore, I am not sure Latin is more popular than Kobaïan nowadays...

There is truly nothing to be ashamed to sing in french. Listen to Jacques Brel, Georges Brassens, Serge Gainsbourg. And prog bands from Québec like Harmonium, Pollen or Cano proved french can suit perfectly prog. I feel the same about polish bands with vocals in english : listen to the metal band Turbo (the best polish metal band ever, Grzegorz Kupczyk is the "polish Dickinson") in polish version and in english version (they released some of their albums in english besides the original version), the accent is truly horrid in english and it decreases terribly the quality of the music. Robert Amirian (Satellite) is at ease in english as he made some of his education in the US.

Still note sure why this one isn't in Zeuhl considering how indebted it is to Magma.  I like it.

They were suggested to us but I'm not sure we got round to voting on them... I didn't realise Eclectic had gone ahead and added them though. Might give this a listen at some point, but I remember listening to the samples on myspace and being a tad underwhelmed. Could be a grower though.

Yeah,  I alerted your team to it on April 8th, and they were added to Eclectic on May 15 by Rivertree (which is great).  I went away on a trip not that long after posting about it in your team thread so may have missed subsequent discussion.  It's better for bands to get added sooner if approved for a team, anyway (we all know that Prog often can fit various categories and multi-team evaluations can take a long time).  A band can always be moved later -- the important thing is getting it in.  I was okay with it in Eclectic, and the other team members had approved it anyway, but thought that it would particularly appeal to Magma/ Vander fans.  It wasn't my initial band suggestion, but I must admit, largely having left team work, that I took particular notice when King By-Tor noted that it had Magma similarities (the Magma-head in me could not resist).

I wrote in your team thread:

I don't know if you know about this one yet.  Voxnostra has been approved for Eclectic, I've just heard it now, but this is so heavily Magma inspired that I think you guys should consider it for Zeuhl.  I think it should be with Magma http://www.myspace.com/voxnostra

And

I felt that Zeuhl would better highlight the project due to its obvious Magma similarities even though, as I recall, it's lacking in the dominant bass-work that is so common to Zeuhl (I should listen again as my memories are already hazy, but the myspace page maxes my system resources).  It's something that would interest Magma-heads, even if they don't particularly like it.  It's the softer, poppier side, I might say, of Zeuhl and Magma.  But as I said, the Eclectic team members approved it (I thought it should be moved when I finally got around to hearing it and only took interest because King-by-Tor mentioned Magma -- I'm not really in team work any more) and so it can always go in Eclectic now and then be re-considered at some other time for a potential move.  Anyway, I thought it would be good to alert your team to it. Personally,  I don't care that much about category placement any more (so common for music to be acceptable for multi-categories, but multi-team evaluations are time consuming)....
....

I did warn of the myspace page seizing computers, so be interested to see what you think now that it's streaming at PA.

EDIT: Very cool that this is streaming at PA!

I have read your comments. Please sorry for my English...
I have wrote a requiem and a mass in latin in 2006. You can hear some extracts here :
http://www.myspace.com/arssacrae
The mass was wrotten for an church organ and a choir. So, I wanted to hear it whith a rock feeling, and I'll did it, there is two versions at the editor, Delatour.
in 2007, I'll try to write a new music like this and I choose others liturgic text. I tried to explain these text whith modern music.
So Vox nostra is born...
Very often, I read that Vox nostra seems like Magma. I think it is because we sing in an unusual langage, and because there is many voices, which are the base of this music, a four (sometimes five) voices choir... and the energy, too.
I know Christian Vander and his music, original, and strong.
Whith the guitarist of Vox, Jean-Claude Delachat, we played in 80'ies in fisrt part concerts of Magma during one year..
But I think, and I tell you that the two musics are different. If you hear a music whith rock feeling and plenty voices, you call it "Zeûhl", so ???
I tried to make differently than Christian, how?
I use a different sort of writing, he uses very often parallels chords, and the choir is very near the piano, and many different rythms and signatures.
My music is using pandiatonism, like Ravel, no parallels chords, and the voices are often out the chords..and contrapunctic lines for the melodies. Are you following me?
But anybody is not a specialist of harmony.
In Vox, you'll can find plenty of jazz chords, and I learned jazz hamony whith a very good friend of Bill Evans, Bernard Maury.
Our first album, Anima, is the beginning of Vox nostra's way... whith some liturgic text, except "Mater" and "Litanie", I wrote them.
It will be very different for the second album, Ubi es, where I write myself very simple latin texts, not religious, but spiritual, which everyone can easyly translate whith just one month of latin study, or with Google, and one or two songs in french.
You will see that nothing is really definitive in music. Maybe we shall sing a song whith an english text, or italian, why not?
So I hope that this message will give a ligth to everybody in this forum.
later, friendly,

Pierre Minvielle from Vox nostra.

Interesting.post.. Incidentally, I never thought it was the same as Magma, I merely thought that it had enough similarities with Magma to be in the broad Zeuhl universe (there are many different bands in Zeuhl.... I wouldn't say that Zao and Magma sound the same either).  I thought it would be something that would appeal to those into Magma/ Zeuhl and so Zeuhl might better highlight the project.

My language on it being "so heavily inspired" was hyperbolic though, and I apologise for that.  Indeed, your music has its own identity.  And of course it fits fine in Eclectic (and so would much of Zeuhl if we didn't have a Zeuhl category).

I look forward to your next album (though, personally, I hope you avoid English lyrics, but offer translations in a CD booklet).  I prefer DVDs to CDs, one can subtitle music that way.

Dear Logan, I just tried to make my own Magma, in fact.
And Christian, a friend of mine, like a german cousin,  was just tried to make his own "my favorite things", Coltrane version, that's what he said to me.
Let Vox grow up.
Later, friendly.

ps : the band for the first concert parts was "Eider stellaire", in progarchives you can hear an album...

Okay, thanks.

Incidentally, Eider Stellaire is one of Zeuhl's best I feel.  I have their albums, but neat to see that they have a streaming album here.
