Topic: Stratocaster vs Telecaster Posted: June 14 2009 at 05:30 |
Hey proggers,
Do you prefer Stratocaster or Telecaster? And please mention why.
Myself, I'd go for a Strat because I don't really like the twangy sound of the Tele.

Strat for me.
The Tele has a far thinner sound.
I like to see the Tele being played though, as the Strat became far too common.

On my Variax I can simulate both ... I think I'll go with the Stratocaster because it's simply a bit more versatile. But sometimes I really like the twang of the Tele.

Being a Gibson-head i would go for a sweet Tele with humbuckers on for a nice heavy crunch sound.... i just don't like stratocasters

^ Yeah. BTW Jimmy Page was the wisest of the bunch. He went from Tele directly to the Gibson. Never mind the Strat. Just kiddin', of course

Depends on what kind of a sound you're looking for. I'm a Gibson man, like some previous posters, but it'd be cool to have a Telecaster for that dry, nasty Steve Howe style tone.

Not a huge fan of Fender, (Ibanez for me) but Strat all the way.
As it's been said, it is WAY over used but hey, nice looking and sounding guitar. I like the sound and look of the Strat over Tele.

I'm a Strat man myself. All my favorite guitarists play them (but often not only them): Blackmore, Trower, Jimi, Hackett, Hillage, etc. Personally, I like the feel of the guitar better, and as others have said, it is a more versatile instrument compared to the Telly. In the right hands, though (like all things), there is no sound like the Telly - but to make it work you really have to attack it, which is why I think a lot of Gibson guys like it. The Strat is also forgiving, so even a sloppy player can actually sound pretty good on it because it will do a lot of the work for you. At the same time, to make it sing you need finesse and a light touch. I seem to have found a good one myself, many years ago, made in 1974, but I bought it in 1978. All my Gibson bros that don't like Fenders like my Strat. Even if it is "common," there is a reason for it. To criticize the instrument is like critizing Stairway to Heaven because it is too popular - sure it's been overplayed, but it's still a great song in spite of that.
I heard that Strats were almost discontinued in the mid-60s because of low sales. We can thank Jimi for rescuing it for us.

How about Jeff Beck as a wonderful Strat player? I think he's one of the most influential. Also for me there Jimi Hendrix and David Gilmour.

The Strat is my personal favourite.
Malcolm Jones of Runrig can produce utter magic on his Strat; in prog bands, Gilmour is my favourite Strat player.
