Okay, this was very hard to do. I checked all comedies on the Wikepedia list, otherwise I couldn't have done this. In the past there has been a topic like this about British comedies but I couldn't find one of America's sitcoms. I took the 25 best-known and most popular ones I could find on the list. And since there have been hundreds of sitcoms so far in American TV-history I had to leave out several great ones (max=25).
Sorry for that. You can mention your favorite in a post of course if it's not on the list.
Another interesting way of posting could be a top 10 out of these 25 fantastic comedies. Have fun !
This would be mine:
1. Friends
2. Cheers
3. Taxi
4. Married ... with children
5. All in the Family
6. Frasier
7. Family Ties
8. Seinfeld
9. Rosanna
10. According to Jim/Perfect Strangers

Friends for me too, but I'm missing Becker. I really like that program. Probaly because of Terry Farrell though.

From the list? Ugh... Fresh Prince of Bel-Air I suppose. I haven't seen it in many years but the only other show I have seen is Friends. If I had to make a top 10 of comedies, I couldn't use any from the list. I also couldn't make it to 10.
1. Arrested Development (Huge drop) 2. Futurama 3. The Simpsons 4. It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia 5. 30 Rock 6. Scrubs 7. The Office |

Married ... with children, truly awful, but on purpose, and I liked who it offended. M*A*S*H was pretty good, though it kind of got stuck in a rut. I was just watching Malcolm In The Middle this morning, which wasn't included in poll. It's pretty good.
What's funny if for you to declare most of these as awful, you must have subjected yourself to them, and I do believe that makes you a masochist. ![]() Edited by Slartibartfast - June 26 2009 at 12:43 |

Seinfeld by 87122817 miles. Many of those are terrible. Some are good. Seinfeld was inspired.

I have to admit it's a funny list but I wanted to dive in history as well. Many never saw Here's Lucy probably and that show is incredibly outdated of course.
To me these are all big names in history but I don't like them all by any means. Most of these comedies are or were very popular over here.
And about history: it's significant that Cheers totally dominated the eighties here in Holland leaving all the others palish maybe with exception of Taxi and Soap (hey, I forgot that one !).
But when Cheers ceased in 1993 it had a great natural follow up in Friends. Most popular comedy ever in the Netherlands without competition. Seinfeld is more for the intellectuals.

Friends is my favourite.
I also seem to have partially inherited my grandfather's tv-tastes: Married with children, Benny Hill, On the buses (the last two are British, I know) |

Now, this is a story all about how
My life got flipped-turned upside down And I liked to take a minute Just sit right there I'll tell you how I became the prince of a town called Bel Air In west Philadelphia born and raised On the playground was where I spent most of my days Chillin' out maxin' relaxin' all cool And all shootin some b-ball outside of the school When a couple of guys Who were up to no good Startin making trouble in my neighborhood I got in one little fight and my mom got scared She said 'You're movin' with your auntie and uncle in Bel Air' I begged and pleaded with her day after day But she packed my suite case and send me on my way She gave me a kiss and then she gave me my ticket. I put my walkman on and said, 'I might as well kick it'. First class, yo this is bad Drinking orange juice out of a champagne glass. Is this what the people of Bel-Air Living like? Hmmmmm this might be alright. But wait I hear there're prissy, wine all that Is Bel-Air the type of place they send this cool cat? I don't think sow I'll see when I get there I hope they're prepared for the prince of Bel-Air Well, the plane landed and when I came out There was a dude who looked like a cop standing there with my name out I ain't trying to get arrested I just got here I sprang with the quickness like lightening, disappeared I whistled for a cab and when it came near The license plate said fresh and it had dice in the mirror If anything I can say this cab is rare But I thought 'Now forget it' - 'Yo homes to Bel Air' I pulled up to the house about 7 or 8 And I yelled to the cabbie 'Yo homes smell ya later' I looked at my kingdom I was finally there To sit on my throne as the Prince of Bel Air |

I thought you left Seinfeld out so I voted MASH, my mistake. Seinfeld is my favourite.
I also like MASH, Friends, The Nanny, Cheers, Frasier, Taxi. Not on the list: Dharma & Greg! Great one. Does anyone remember it? |
