Been a long time fan.  There are threads already for this though...
Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

I know of at least one person who will screw her way into a NIN concert if she gets a chance.

I should also mention the grammar and punctuation of the this thread's title makes me laugh. :)

Thirded.

Some people here probably know I'm a huge fan of NIN, and they were my favorite band for quite a while. They're still definetly in my top 5 bands, because of Trent Reznor's excellent compositional skills and use of atmospherics.

And I still think some songs of theirs are not just good, but also quite proggy. Songs like:

March of the Pigs
The Becoming
A Warm Place
Somewhat Damaged
Just Like You Imagined
La Mer
The Way Out is Through
Ripe (With Decay)
Most of Ghosts I-IV
Leaving Hope

Had most of NIN's material been like these, I suspect NIN would easily have been in PA.

I started liking them for the music for the PC game Quake (or was it Quake 2?). Believe it or not I find that just as exciting as their regular album releases.

Get The Fragile first, it showcases their range moreso than TDS imo.

I'd start with The Downward Spiral, With Teeth, and Pretty Hate Machine.

The newest album, The Slip, is also available as a free download on the band's website too.

Hmm, all their albums are different, it'd be nice if there were some greatest hit's compilation to start with. If you want proggy, either the downward spiral or the fragile are for you, but if you are allergic to emo then none of the early albums before fragile are for you. If you want a more minimalist album, but with lots of soul and still interesting, try with teeth. I don't really follow any newer stuff so I can't help you after that.
