Does anyone have a list of Opeth songs without growling. I just listened all the way through Damnation and really enjoyed it, but I can't stand it when Mr. Cookie Monster arrives. Anyone know them enough to help on that.

Thanks

Hey

I've only got DELIVERANCE and BLACKWATER PARK

From what I remember, these tracks don't have any growling:

-Harvest (Blackwater Park)
-A Fair Judgement (An awesome track off an otherwise pretty terrible album, and it has growls on nearly every track)
-BLEAK (This track has growls, but once you get past them (They only last for a minute) the singing and the rest of the track is great)

Sorry, I'm not the biggest Opeth fan, but thats all that I can remember from the top of my head.
Good luck - Some of the local Opeth junkies will be able to help you much better than I.

-Joel

Doesn't that sort of defeat the purpose? Tongue
Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

I hear you. One of the main beauties of Opeth and bands similar is the contrast between growling and clean vox. It's one of the reasons I listen to them.

Anyways, to the point, here's a list chronologically:

Morningrise:
To Bid You Farewell (strongly recommended)

My Arms Your Hearse
Credence

Still Life
Face Of Melinda
Benighted

Blackwater Park
Harvest

Deliverance
A Fair Judgement

Ghost Reveries
Atonement
Hours Of Wealth
Isolation Years

Watershed
Coil
Burden
Porcelain Heart
Hex Omega

I think that solves everything as far as pure clean vox goes

You should check out Unhealer by Ihsahn, It has Mikeal Akerfelt as a guest vocalist on it, amazing song, amazing album.
Also If you havent already you should deffinetly check Out opeth's live album Lamentations, the first half is all their lighter stuff and they end it of with their heavier stuff, amazing DVD.

Definitely listen to Alex's comment. It's everything I was about to say.

And also, just buy Still Life and try to listen to the whole thing. At first I was actually kind of AFRAID of the vocals, but I've grown to love them. If you can't get into the growls on Still Life, then stop trying to get into Opeth.

LOL

That is my only problem with Opeth. The music and Mikael Åkerfeldt's normal vox are great.

Get the Lamentations DVD ... getting used to the vocals is much easier when you can also watch the guys.

I came to this site with basically your original question as my prime motivator.

To say dragonvoice is an acquired taste is the understatement of the decade, but if there's anywhere to learn it, it's from Opeth. Just buy Watershed and give it time. From there you'll be able to handle it.

BTW, Akerfeldt has the best dragonvoice ever. That youtube link is an awesome example, there's a back and forth between Ihsahn and Akerfeldt and it sounds like a bat flying around the devil.

And live, he's mindboggling. Give it some time.
You are quite a fine person, and I am very fond of you. But you are only quite a little fellow, in a wide world, after all.

OK, excellent, thanks for the input, certainly dragonvoice sounds "better" than cookie monster, though I must admit it's just as childish in my opinion. I gather I'll be able to maybe "grok" Opeth if I can enjoy their non-growling music and then venture step by step into the rest. The DVD idea is a good one, I'll do it. Thanks again for your time and ideas.

Greetings

mgallard

Still Life is my favorite complete Opeth album. I like a song here or there on their others. For some reason, their other songs I tolerate the harsh vocals because I like the rest of the song. But Still Life seems to flow really well for me. Of course I'm something of a concept album junkie, so the story really drew me.

I have never heard Opeth, because I really don't like growling vocals, and so have avoided them.  So can't really contribute much to this discussion, except to say that I did enjoy Akerfeldt's guest lead vocals on the new OSI album.  He has a good voice.  I'm probably in the same boat as the OP, in that I would be much more interested in Opeth except for the cookie monster vox.
I can understand your anger at me, but what did the horse I rode in on ever do to you?

Then you need to buy the album Damnation which is all clean vocals and guitars, with mellotrons and harmonies, it's like a dark Genesis / Camel vibe. Sort of.

Same here. Almost ALL of my favorite albums are are concept albums. Scenes From A Memory, Still Life, The Perfect Element, Snow, The Lamb, etc., etc.

Haha, the word dragonvoice IMO makes death growls sound so cheesy. In any event Opeth is awesome, and the growls are a huge part of the picture. Without that, I'd venture they'd sound pretty generic.
