PoS by a million miles. Symphony X is technically fantastic, nothing more.
PoS is lyrically sensitive and brilliant, compositionally jaw dropping and technically fantastic.

I like this to bands they their style is diffrent. symphony xis progressive power and has symphonic and neo classical influences. pain of salvation is different. their style is much similar to that 70 prog bands but with a heavier sound. no one wins

As much as i love some Symphony X works like The Divine Wings of Tragedy, I went with PoS because they were more consistent throughout their career (maybe with the exception of Scarsick, which in fact isn't that bad...just average)

I would have to agree, though I have only heard Symphony X once or twice.

Pain of Salvation is literally the most creative band I have ever heard and listened to! PoS beats Symphony X by far in regards to talent and sounding amazing

Russell Allen is easily one of the best metal singers for me. Gildenlöw is also great.

I wonder how PoS would do in a versus poll against Ayreon or Riverside. If they were up against Opeth or Porcupine Tree, they would likely lose because of the popularity of those 2 bands.

My vote goes to Pain of Salvation. They have been one of my favorite bands since my formative musical years in high school around the late 90s.
But it really depends on what you're going for... the two really have completely different sounds. Symphony X has the extravagant, epic neo-classical sound. Pain of Salvation is more thought provoking, mixes more styles, and tends to push the boundaries a lot more. I'm with dtismajesty... Pain of Salvation is more progressive in the purest sense of the word. ...don't know what to think about the whole banjo thing though. |

"In terms of consistency, Symphony X"
Consistency is often the opposite of progression. Danny G said himself that Pain of Salvation was not about recreating success, but experimenting and bringing new surprises to their music, which is what "progressive" should be. |

POS is more inventive and original, but symphony X has quite cool compositions, and have a very imaginative attitude. I pick SYX. :)

can't say I've warmed to either though of the two, PoS wins on several levels, V was just too bloated and haughty for me

Pain of Salvation is highly overrated. I have all albums from both bands, and PoS has yet to impress me at all. Russell Allen is far superior to PoS's vocalist. PoS might as well stand for Piece of sh*t. Symphony X is better in every way. I think PoS might be okay if they got a new vocalist.

Pain of Salvation
I actually liked Paradise Lost and my favorite from Symphony X is The Odyssey...so I guess I'm weird with that |

Pain of Salvation, based on what I've heard. I only have Remedy Lane, and Paradise Lost, respectively, by these two bands. But I am eager to hear more. Any recommendations from X or PoS fans? I'm a big DT fan, and asked a friend 'I want to hear more music like this'. So I discovered PoS and Symphony X.
Paradise Lost is a good album, in my opinion. However, Remedy Lane is more original. Maybe those two aren't the best ones to compare. I'll have to hear more from both bands.
