Some of what little I have downloaded was available free and wasn't available for sale.  I downloaded for pay Radiohead's In Rainbows.  Probably paid too much as went out and got a hard copy as soon as it was available.  Excellent cover art, by the way.  NIN's The Slip I downloaded for free and then bought a hard copy.  Same deal with the new Marillion.

I can't cope without hard copies. Embarrassed

Exactly!
And I know what you mean about the raping....I have had no money the last few days. I now have $60....you;d think I'd save it for gas or food...but nope. Going out in a few mins actually to buy some CD's LOL

LOL

More seriously, I gotta tell ya, albums need lemon laws. I mean buying a CD for one or two songs even though you've never heard the others then you get the CD home and you are stunned when the rest of the CD sucks. Bah!

That's why free music can be great, don't you think? You can listen to the whole album and judge if you like it and will buy it then ;)

That's exactly right. In fact, knowing the albums were good thanks to free listening, I bought 8 CD's today!

Generally most music can be found for free, and I buy music, so of course I buy music that can be found for free.

Of course, I do set up guidelines. There are plenty of bands (Yes and Pink Floyd) who don't need my money and I probably wouldn't buy their albums anyways, but I do get some of their music online.

That being said, I ALWAYS support lesser known bands. I'm not really sure where the line is for bands who need more support, though I tend to be pretty generous with my money.

The quality has a lot to do with it too. NIN released The Slip for free from their site, and I was dissapointed with it, so I didn't feel the need for a hard copy. I had also acquired a lot of free downloads of individual songs from SOAD's Mezmerize and Hypnotize, yet I still got those albums.

By the way, the streaming tracks on this site have been tremendously helpful in aiding me to find more new music than I really needed to. LOL
Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

Dead Isn't that a bit hypocritical? I mean, either you like the songs (then you should buy them) or you don't (then you shouldn't). I hope you are aware that today you can also buy single tracks.

BTW: If you only like some of the tracks of an album that doesn't necessarily mean that the other tracks are crap ... and it certainly doesn't mean that the artist doesn't deserve to get paid for them.

I'll always buy music...

I did a fair bit of downloading in my day, but not anymore.

I don't think its "Stealing", but I would rather support an artist through buying CD's.

And Yes - I understand they get very little of what I pay.

To me it's about the quality. I mean, I have In Rainbows by Radiohead, which I got for free because it was so easy. Truth be told this was the first album I got from Radiohead, so I was no fan, what-so-ever, and never quite got into them through it, as people saay it's not the album to use for that. Later on I bought OK Computer.

then I got Marillion's new album because it was also free and easy to acquire. And I didn't know wherther it was going to be good or bad, frankly the "hit-song" wasn't all that good. But once I listened to it some, 30 times in a row i was quite sure I wanted to buy it. As the cd that is, I wanted it with the covers and on better quality. Simple

Also, keep in mind that Radiohead made more off of In Rainbows than of any other album. I feel no guilt whatsoever by not paying anything for that album.

^ you may not feel guilt, but the fact remains that if all the other fans did like you did, they would not have made any money with the album - at least through that new, experimental channel.

My point is: If an artist offers an album free of charge but asks for a donation, and you download the album for free and find that you like it a lot ... then you should make a donation.

I do the same, but the problem for me is that the amount of music I want to buy is larger than the amount of music I can buy.

I will buy the indiviual songs, but if I bought the CD, I want my money back.

I don't do illegal dowloads, it's a matter of morals and laziness. I like to have a hard copy of the album, definitely if an album has a very interesting or special artwork. If a band releases an album as a free legal download, I don't see no reason to not download it though. So, my vote goes to the first option.

^ that's a problem with this poll ... I'm not sure whether it refers to legal downloads.
